Volvo.....then isn't it a F*rd?

Oh and mine (S4 std other than a Milltek Dual) does do over 30 to the gallon, but when I'm plodding about. I'm surprised how economical it is even though I don't care as I only do 2-3k miles a year in it

Can I refer you to my previous post please? Either you have something wrong with your car that does not throw a fault code (shot Maf, boost leak etc etc) or your driving style needs to adjust to use the car efficiently. I am not the only one that gets "reasonable" fuel consumption figures with the Audi's. I suggest if you are only doing "normal non-spirited" driving, get the mixture leaned right out and find whatever the fault is.

Or perhaps you are unlucky with a car that will always return poor consumption....
To me the implication of a monster S4 is a higher state of tune? Therefore the assumption is the engine has been remapped and likely to be more efficient?......I would expect such a Monster of a car to have better mpg when used lightly (effieciency) and worse consumption when realising it's full potential, that is why I wondered about remapping.

My car appears to run fine thanks, no codes on Vagcom as mentioned, maf gives a healthy reading and it has been regularly checked for boost leaks, I can't really insist a mechanic finds a fault if they are not obvious.
Thankfully with the help of this forum I am fully aware of the importance of regular health checks.

I genuinely don't think these cars are that economical, I can get far more mpg out of 3.6 & 3.8 litre Pork using the same if not more enthusiastic driving style.

Oi you I'll not allow any Volvo bashing on here. I drive a 160mph (300bhp) Volvo estate and they are (or used to be anyway) fantastic cars.

Very similar to the S4 avant performance wise but cheaper!

Apparantly the S60 D5 is good for about 140mph. Pretty good for 45mpg.......

I test drove a T5R when the Police started using them, it was a handful to say the least. Horrendous torque steer, rolly polly and felt very big and I just hate the dash and interior personally.

I you can't fault the car for what it does. For me, its the way it does it that puts me off. Personal choice I suppose.

Clubsport, we'll have to agree to disagree. I am not alone in my good fuel consumption. Regarding the Porsche, kinda different car isn't it?

Don't laugh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! a high power LPG conversion can be good, the right system (lpg is around 102 ron) BMC Sequent is a very good system, (prins is also good, but BMC better for turbo cars)and...... can match your fuel power...

its under half the price of 98ron.... so your 25mpg will be like 50mpg...

People are really scared of the system, and think they are all slow and rubbish, the latest systems map to the lamba/ecu... and fuel curve very well.

Its just people don't know enough about them, so they are a little scared..

I as wondering if a lpg system may suit...I once heard they were no good on turbo cars, but after reading this post I guess that 'no good' was a usual rumour?

I'm not fussed but what is the cost of such a conversion?

BMC is very good, well I have seen some good conversions, and so many say prins... but when you did deep the mapping is not that good for turbo cars.

the BMC has been placed on 460bhp cars, they just add twin vapourisers. well if you are interested talk to a guy called Stuart at http://www.gas4cars.com/default.asp?url=home.htm tell him you spoke to Darren with the S4. Its funny you know when you talk to people and they don't give you any cra* and just talk straight, he is one of them types LPG for 15 years and all that.... why things are good, why they are not, with real reasons.

he quoted £1700 all in for a 2.7, that is good..... the BMC reads of all the sensors map and all that....

I have looked into it a fair bit, there are loads of forums.

Well I certainly can't get 30mpg out of my S4.

On a run from Sussex to Lancashire (and with saintly restraint apart from the blast from the M6 Toll barriers) I managed 28.4,..................never seen a figure that high before lol

Now I've been back in Sussex for a few weeks, it's back down to about 22.5mpg.

Who knows how consistant these computers are with themselves and with others.

- quit smoking or *insert other bad habit here*
- tell the missus hard times are on the way and she will need to cut back on her luxuries so you can get to work and earn the crust

it will pay for the extra petrol

keep the s4 - it sounds like you want to, you will regret the s4 going... :D

Mine seems to vary... daily usage i.e. 35 miles a day to work and back plus whatever i do eve's and weekends - which involves a bit of everything, A/B road twisties, A road dual and stop start town driving gives me aout 280-290miles ish out of a tank. Obviouly more stop start town driving brings that down a bit.

However on a run, i.e. whilst on our recent road-trip round europe on holiday, even with an occaisional heavy foot (took on a maseratti on the autobahn at one point.... he gave up at 140 ;) ) i was getting 350-400 out of a tank.

Not sure what the figures equate to in terms of mpg but for my driving style at least they definitely suite long runs better.

With regards TartanRob's comments about driving style... parhaps you could elabourate? What is the best way to drive these cars to acheive better economy?

RE LPG, I bought a boat a while back off a company in Salisbury, they were an LPG conversion company and their show car was a S4 that they used to race.

i have always had a problem with this subject because i only ever get 21 to the gallon.
i too have been thinking of a diesel but then ..you only live once.
most of my driving is local and some of it when the car is cold.(on enriched mixture)
my longer journeys can pep it up to 27(after reseting the average consumption diddler) but that is not very often
i do about 12k a year in this car and i do drive other vehicles through my work.
bottom line is....i want the fun.....i have to pay.....!!!

Dave,

How much will you get for your S4?
If it has been modded...what would you have lost on those mods?
What will that buy you?
Will you miss the S4 (correct answer here is "yes")
Will you enjoy your diesel (or other) replacement car as much (...!)
According to Tarton Rob's figures you'll save just over £15 a week. Give up smoking (if you do that is), buy two fewer bottles of wine.

TBH I tend to use a Golf GTi for my daily commute now, and the RS4 comes out occasionally and at weekends. The Golf doesn't give me anywhere near the enjoyment and it only gives 8mpg more. The Golf is boring..OK it gets me from A to B but the Audi gets me from A to B with a huge grin on my face.

So for you it's a "head" and "heart" thing really. the head will tell you financially that you ought to change but your heart is telling you to keep the S4.

I dunno how old you are...but you've probably got plenty of time to be sensible later on in life.
