RS4 Exhaust

Post by GrahamS4 » Wed Oct 24, 2007 9:23 pm

Thanks to Chris (and Doug) at MRC and some fantastic fabrication by RS Fabrications I have got a full RS4 exhaust on my car.

So gutted RS4 downpipes, the 200CPI RS4 cats and the stock RS4 cat back.

My car was a bit of a pig to get the downpipes off of requiring hours of patience, brut force and technique which I was more than happy was not down to me!

The outcome is pretty much what I wanted, satisfaction of knowing I have improved the whole system including the bottleneck (cats), OEM noise levels, no fears of knocking, boom or drone, all for roughly the equivalent price of just a Miltek dual catback which I am not sure would have met my requirements.

The tone at idle is slightly deeper and has a nice note. On the move there could be something marginal in the noise but to be honest it's as quiet and refined as it was before, so far as I can tell so far. Considering the gutted cats and we also added an additional RS4 style opening to the airbox, I am pleasantly surprised. Either that or I am am still all confused by a quick run around the block with only downpipes on the car! Now that was loud!

My car was already running good timing and could not run any more according to MRC. I was hoping for more but on a back to back peak maf comparison run 24 hours ago, it's only slightly up and nothing to write about.

The car does feel pleasant to drive however, always seems to have an urgency to it and is much happier to pull round to the higher revs without giving you it's own signs to change up. Pick up is certainly more perky than before.

On the basis of how it drives compared to the actual peak maf increase I was hoping for something by the way of FATS time improvement and here there is something a little more noticeable.

Previously my absolute best time has been 5.062, but not something I could reproduce easily, most times coming in around 5.2.

Again, I did some fats times 24 hours ago. Absolute best was 4.934 but again could not reproduce and other runs for the evening were between that and 5.2. Considering outside temp was only 4C and I kept the car moving, heatsoak not a massive issue here.

Runs with the RS4 exhaust tonight, heavier fuel load and outside temp 11C instead of 4C, I consistently got low 4.9s accorss three runs and on a last run on the way home on an incline (I don't normally measure here) I got a 5.02.

So the FATAS times just about collaborate the car feeling a little more keen to rev, epsecially at the higher revs, but other than that, I don't belive I have anything more than a minor BHP gain, perhaps up to 10BHP.

I mentioned fabrication earlier, this is how we got an RS4 backbox to sit in a prefacelift S4 bumper cut out:

I can't deny a greater peak maf increase would have been nicer to see, but all in all I am quite happy and am glad I went the RS4 route.

Happy for you Graham. So what was the damage if you don't mind? :)

Been toying with the idea of having a supersprint exhaust. See link below;

All I can say is if you are considering the Supersprint then you won't be dissapointed.

I have one on my RS, and I absolutely love it! One of the best mods I've done.

I just don't understand why it's not widely used on here!

That's an excellent mod. Getting a wee bit miffed with my Milltek catback (knocking and droning). Rather than buying the rest of the Milltek system at mega bucks this seems like a good way to go, maybe with the Supersprint. Good quality work.

My twin does not knock, the single did though, despite many, many attempts to fix it.

As for the drone, well, yes the twin does that :)

Mine never used to knock, now I can't shut the thing up. The drone I can just about live with but put the two together....

Well, I don't really like talking money and it all depends on how much you can source the used RS4 parts for of course.

If you imagine I think you are looking roughly at about 5-6+ hours labour cost to remove, gut and refit standard S4 downpipes, then the cost of a Milltek catcback, I have lots of change.

At the point of the the exhaust already modified to fit my costs were roughly 50/50 parts and fitting labour (including the gutting of precats), it's the labour that kills it, but I watched it done and I am 100% certain nobody could have done it on my car quicker. It was a fiddley, tough horrible job, although some of my bolts gave more of a fight than some cars I think.

You could also cut costs where I couldn't resist the perfection of RS Fabrications tig welded tailpipe masterpeice!

Replies like that make me KNOW I made the right call. I would be at the point of returning to stock had that happened to me I think.

Some science

Post by GrahamS4 » Fri Oct 26, 2007 6:35 pm

Here are some logs. I did before and after logs, literally 24 hours apart so only outside temp, fuel load and the RS4 exhaust modification difference.

It just so happened the before log is my absolute all time pre-mod best FATS time where as the after is the best of the 3 runs I quickly did once I got home after the work, so maybe there is better to come.

You can see the slight increase in peak MAF and a few extra degrees of timing here and there, most notably at the high rpm.

Not a lot in it, but the before was a fantastic run and my after times all much more consistent at that level.

Did three more fats times this morning usuing my usual routine (still the 3/4 fuel load though). Got a 4.897, 4.888 and a 4.911.

Consitantly about three tenths quicker at least than before on average.

The logs for the 4.888 FATS. Good timing, very little <beep> (not shown) and good peak MAF.
