The steel insert that holds the plastic fuel filler cap is rusted and seems to be getting worse.
im thinking the rust will make it way into the fuel and start clogging fiters etc.
Is this rust a common problem ? and any ideas how to get rid of it?
dont want to paint it unless its the only solution.
cheers.
rust in fuel filler cap ??
RE: rust in fuel filler cap ??
Are you referring to the recess, directly behind the filler flap?

RE: rust in fuel filler cap ??
i think he means the threaded part in the filler neck. as far as clogging filters, that's what they're there for, to prevent this sort of contamination from reaching the injectors so unless it was rusted to the point of falling in bits i wouldn't worry about it. in fact you'd probably risk more contamination by trying to rub it down and paint it

Yea - it was the threaded section I was referring to. the rust is more of a powder than anything serious - just a bit annoying when i see it on the filler cap every time i fill up.
nobody else has this issue withtheir cars ?
i recon a wipe now and again with an oily rag should keep it clean and dry enough.
cheers.
