S3Just,

Try this link for an S4 buyer guide as well as a wealth of interesting info.

(Go right to the bottom of the page for the buyers guide.)

PS Don't be put off by the early S4's. It takes a keen eye to spot the subtle cosmetic differences from the exterior. The interior difference is a matter of choice, either way the differences are not worth more than 1-2K IMO. A low mileage fully loaded early model is more appealing to me.

I bought privately paid £15750 18 months ago for 1997 model registered in Nov 1999 with 34K miles and one owner - with the winter pack i.e. heated seats, ski bag. Black/blue alcantara, Bose. I took a private warranty with warranty direct for £320 that covered the turbos and manifold etc. Incidentally at the time there wasn’t a single S4 going for less than £18K and they had 45-55K miles. The same mileage/spec car but one year newer was going for anything between 21-23K on dealer forecourts!

Personally - I'd have a low mileage older model over a high mileage new one. You'll get much more for you money.

The turbo oil pipes passage mods may be looked at as some kind of piece of mind. But it’s no guarantee, there are a small number of lads with the new S4 who have suffered the same fate.

Who knows there may be an element of luck. I know of three other early S4s with no problems. Mine now has 57K miles on it.

It's been AMD chipped from 47K miles. Nothing wrong with the turbos or manifolds.

It had the Recall or "Quality improvement" work carried out on it i.e. new ECU, DV's rubber hoses it's fine. The car gets properly warmed up and properly cooled down.

As Dippy says the S4 in standard guise is no sports car. But at the very least chipped with uprated suspension TOTALLY transforms them. I’ve managed perfectly well with the standard brakes all be it they have been replaced for the new improved discs and standard Audi pads. These are a huge improvement over the old set-up and have survived a performance-driving lesson of 1hr round our local racetrack. I was sympathetic to them but still much harder than I would ever use them on the road. Hhmm.. well the recent Scottish Audi meet also saw them being highly utilised round the Highlands following Steve in his RS4 and the rest of the gang.
