A few tuning questions....

Post by myfirsts4 » Tue Sep 11, 2007 5:27 pm

Hi guys, new to the S4 just starting to carry out a few sensible mods on my '98 S4 (100k miles). Was thinking:

1. Panel air filter but which one? Think the two main runners are pipercross or K&N, anyone have any good/bad reports or any other suggestions?

2. Gut pre-cats, hoping to do this at the same time as.. (anyone around the Gloucestershire area want to do this for ££?)

3. MRC re-map, is it worth the extra £100 for the custom re-map?

4. Want to try and get a stainless exhaust as well, want one that is not really any louder than stock if poss and one that doesn't cost a fortune! Which should I look at?

With all of this what kind of power and torque can i expect and what will that do to my 0-60 times?

Sorry if this has been covered to death but couldnt find as much info as I would have liked.

PS killer site. Looking forward to the 300bhp+ club, will arm wrestle the wife for the ££!

Do it.

Yes - definitely.

If you are willing to pay the extra £££'s for the new exhaust, then £100 is nothing.

Personally, I got the generic remap from standard and I was more than happy.

Then again, as Rolskii says, it won't last long!

get the filter, exhaust, gutted pre-cats first then the custom re-map. should see around 320 BHP not sure about torque, 0-60 will obviousley be reduced, not sure what to though possibly remove about .5s from the standard time.

Be aware that certain panel filters can kill your MAF if over oiled. Also there are plenty of people with high power figures still running the stock filters.

What do you want from the car?

Most people here are still using the stock paper filter (fair enough to those that don't, but I think we agree the air filter is no great restriction at least not in the first few stages of tune).

I would say the £100 difference for the custom map is a no brainer, just do it.

Re. exhaust, if you don't want noise (like me) leave it alone. Dependind on the car you are still looking at anything from 310+ BHP, mine is a good 320BHP.

Otherwise I would say gut the cats, expecially as you have not had the map yet, definatelly custom map if you gutt the cats and a 3" single milltek catback if you want it to sound better. I doubt much of a gain (comparing the MRC FATS database) but does set you up better for bigger things later on.
