I am sure you guys are right, but I can't see how they can seize up?, they are single piston floating calipers, maybe you guys mean the handbrake mechanism?
Try borrowing the tool for screwing the pistons back in and screw them all the way in and ratchet them back out a few times using the handbrake lever, that should free them up.
I would have thought that would sort it, it's worth a try.
You could also check the play on the pins the caliper "floats" on, see if they are worn as this lets it twist under pressure.

maybe its the pins that are dirty and causing the piston to hold its position thus causing it to get stuck and hold the pad on..(seizeing)
also the handbrake mech if seized will keep the pad onto the disc..
that would be felt if jacked up and the wheel span as it would bind..mite be sum grit behind the backing plate and touching the disc..??

Yep I agree Woody mate, that's what I mean, I don't think the caliper needs replacing, just a good freeing up and a good clean.

Yes, good idea, If it was the handbrake mechanism they would both calipers would grind ours went 1 at a time, but i do agree with woody!!

the cable is split from the handle into 2 cables..1 can sieze on its own..

RE: Re: RE: light grinding noise from rear brake
oh ok!! Does that mean the cable could have seized up due to lack of lubrication??

the cables have a plastic insert to keep them lubricated... if the handbrake mechanism siezes or the slides get rusty or dry then that will feel like the cable is siezing..the only way to be sure is to un-clip the cable and check its free movement

RE: Re: RE: light grinding noise from rear brake
When my calipers seized, they seized good and proper, no amount of force would shift them.

RE: light grinding noise from rear brake
Holy Thread resurection Batman !!!
Am currently experiencing this exact same problem... squeeling, whistling noise nearly all the time, and slight grinding noise from rear under light braking... sounds identical to this as posted by lordlip. Was there a resolution to this?? did strippinga dn cleaning the rear brakes solve it?
I was hpoing it'd just be new pads but having had a look at them last night they seem to have plenty of life in them. Incidentally, this only seems to have been happening since i had to do a rapid stop at the weekend to avoid going into the back of my mates celica at the lights! (i though we were going through them.. he thought otherwise!) Felt the abs judder briefly but it all worked and i stopped fine. Noise seems to have been since then. Would heavy application cause the brakes to seize or lodge some dirt where it ought not to be lodged??

RE: light grinding noise from rear brake
Quickest thing is to check for seized calipers the fronts should push back quite easily and the rear piston should turn quite easily.

If the piston dust gator has been split, the car could collect grit/dirt,tdiquattro wrote:I am sure you guys are right, but I can't see how they can seize up?, they are single piston floating calipers, maybe you guys mean the handbrake mechanism?

I had a split dust gator on my rs4 fronts, had a tiny stone in there,
it heated up, didnt release and almost locked up the front wheel ... removed the tiny stone .. rebuilt the caliper, seals, gators, re-polished 1 piston etc ... all good ..

Also check the top carrier pin, they get the most abuse and wear excessively .... as stated they twist and wear the pads quite unevenly..

what brakes do yuo have on the rear..
happy dayz .... party ....
