What about tdi one with a remap. They can feeel extremely quick and return good mpg with all the space. You could also throw some cooking oil in to keep the costs down if you are that way inclined...

There isn't really a particularly well performing A6 TDI to start with though is there?

The 2.5TDi's not bad for what it is, 160BHP, 230 foot pounds of torque, plus 40MPG. Stick a tuning box on it and youd see near on 200BHP, still with 40MPG!

Tell you what though, in real world day to day driving - I bet there isn't much between the new B7 diesels - particularly the 3.0 and my old remapped s4 - had a hell of a time keeping in front of one, the mid range poke on them is immense.

So are we saying that child car seats are a bit of a no-no in an S4?? I have to say, I have driven one, and didn't really take much notice of the space in the rear as I was pre-occupied with the size of the boot!

I've looked into the A6 idea, but can't find a nice low milage one I like for my budget! Quite like the idea of a e-mapped diesel A6, tweak the suspension a bit, hmmmm........IF I can find a good one! Honestly, this is actually where I started my thinking, but the 'S' versions just seem better value in comparison!!

I've got my lad in a booster seat in my S4, in the back he's a bit squashed (5 years old and quite a tall boy!) my ribs bear testament to that.

I generally sit him behind the wife! But yeah bit cooped up in the back. For me a drive of 2 hours is about the limit, but seeing as I do that like once a blue moon with people in the back its neither here nor there.

You'll only need the S6's length IMHO if you travel anywhere with the car full for more than 2 hours. I'd get the S4 and save the money from the fuel consumption difference for any repair bills.

If we were talking S4 v RS6, well that'd be a different story :-P

Would make a good street sleeper, even better than an S4/S6!

If I wanted something bigger than my S4 I'd look at buying an S8 over the S6 unless you insist on an avant (which runins the handling anyway......)

As jfeb/dummi suggests the perfect compromise would be an A6 2.7T - stacks of room for the family and tunability of the S4. Sure it will be a little slower and not quite as chuckable, but on a daily basis with family in mind the A6 would prove to be the better car. Make sure you get the later A6 - it had a facelift at one point with a few updates which improved a few things. That said though - if you just want a car that is hassle free the S6 may be a better choice. The 2.7T does need TLC and there is always the threat of the dreaded turbo failure setting you back minimum 3.5k. This nearly put me off buying my S4 - but I found one really low mileage and well maintained example that I bought from a dealer with warranty. It still went bang and the w@nkers at Audi rejected the warranty. Do I regret it now having spend a small fortune on getting the most out of it?? - hell no, everyday my grin grows larger - the 2.7t is just awesome!! AWESOME!

zero kk=503BHP!!!!!!!!! thats gotta b CRAZY! even thou i no longer own S4 can i say that the S4 is not a family car. its a small saloon car. even with kids in the back ov mine they where kickin the seat back. i nearly bought a S6 b4 i got the S and its a crackin car, exellent value 4 money as well. as 4 fuelin issues, a chipped up S4 is terrible on fuel, they boost low so r allways usein the turbos. my 911 is a 3.6 and its better on fuel than my old 300+bhp S4........
The lowriders gone! But still loved. Long live the 911-C2!!!

Well after moving from a s4 to a rs6 i find the 6 much better for space & getting the family in ( 2 kids 4 & 6) Try to get a test drive in both with the family . If you want to tune the car for big power get a s4 or 2.7 a6 , but they will cost alot to fix when they go wrong .
For me i've found the 6 to be the car the 4 should have been .. good luck

The RS6 pulls less than a slightly modified s4.
There's no problem in driving more than 2 hours in an s4, I already did more and it's very comfortable even if I'm 190cm (height)

My stage1 rs6 is much faster than my kko4 s4 ,

But back to topic , I'am 6 ft 2 and find the 6 that little it bigger that makes it better for me . the s4 is a great car but in 3 years i had nothing but problems .

I don't believe so - I looked in to this a year ago. But I could be wrong :)
