S4 Confusion

Post by Dippy » Thu May 29, 2003 8:47 am

Someone at work finally noticed my car (most cars here are rather mundane), but here's roughly how the conversation went:

Him: "I see you have an RS4?"
Me: "Actually no - mines an S4"
Him: "Oh - it looks the part though"
Me: "Yes, the S4 has body parts that the A4 didn't have, plus mine's lowered. But the RS4 has flared wheel arches and door trim to match, and a different front spoiler"
Him: "So you decided not to go for the RS4 then?"
Me: "To be honest, I didn't actually know about the RS4 when I bought my S4*, and besides not only would it have been too expensive for me, but at the time none of the RS4s had been delivered and it would have been difficult for me to get one anyway."
Him: "Oh right. We saw the RS4 at the motorshow. I'm amazed how they got that engine in."
Me (its still early so my brain's not working yet): "It's actually the same basic engine as the S4, but with a lot of tuning parts and bigger turbos."
Him: "So yours is a 4.2 then?"
Me (finally waking up): "Er...you're talking about the new S4 then?"
Him: "Yes, the RS4 with the 4.2 litre engine, like the RS6"
Me: "No, that's the S4. The RS4 has a 2.7 litre turbo-charged engine. Audi will presumably make another RS4, hopefully with a turbocharged V8. The RS6 has a turbocharged V8 but the S4's is normally aspirated."
Him: "Oh right. Better get going now - see you later."

Good job I didn't mention B5 and B6!

*This is actually true - I only found out about the RS4 after I had ordered my S4!

I remember the first time I saw an RS4 at the motorshow. I was doing the understandable bit, as was meo padre, but there was this monkey wandering around with his mate who really annoyed us. He was one of life's know-it-alls, except he didn't. His uninformed mate said "oh, that looks a bit special", to which the smartass replied "no, it's only an A4 Avant, they're a bit heavy and slow really, it's the engines, too reserved". One word. TIT. It is nice to know that people like that exist though, because then you meet them at traffic lights and so on, and can really annoy them, blasting off into the distance

Rock on
