Tuner couldn't remap my car through OBD port, is this normal

Post by neckarsulm » Fri Dec 01, 2006 9:26 pm

Hello,
A certain up and coming tuning co. offered to remap my car as a demo but looked at the reg and went S reg, can't do it without removing ECU.
I advised him it was drive by wire and he had a go but confirmed his suspicions that it was impossible via the OBD port.
My question is, I have heard about MRC tuning cars via the OBD port, do they have some secret or can they only do this to cars that they have previously remapped with the ECU removed from the car?
Thanks.

My car is S reg and the ECU was removed to map. The "real time" mapping was done on a substitute ECU with whatever the required interface already modified on it, the finished map then duplicated onto my ECU before refitting.

Yup Ecu needs to be removed. I think you may be able to do it if you disconnect the dash display, not 100% sure though.

My car (Nov 99) was also remapped by MRC via the substitute ECU method...not sure MRC do serial port remaps.

OK, thanks chaps, that answers my question.
I guess once the ECU is out, he wont need to open it like they used to do in the olden days!
I may as well go for it seeing as it's FOC then, I'll report back.
I'm a bit nervous about using someone who isn't an S4 specialist but their source of maps is quite reputable.

If they want you as a demo surely they would like you to spread the word to who they are?

Also good for us if you let us know if they aren't so good

If your nervous then why are you doing it ? The damaged that could be visited on your car by a bad map is simply not worth the risk.

Thinking that myself, sounds R&D to me and although you are probably getting a good price (B hope so), not wanting to put you off however are you so sure you will save in the long run?
