I don't know the part number but any good parts guy should be able to point you in the right dirrection if you say the gauge is bust.

Rob (DSGWAGEN) suggested the cheaper version to me when I was ordering. I think I've posted his contact details before...

The part numbers for the Coolant Temp Sensor can be found at the end of this thread:

http://rs246.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB ... ic&t=54533

I changed this on my car recently, the sensor was faulty (error logged in VAGCOM) but the gauge was showing the correct temp so this may not be your problem. I believe the ECU uses this sensor but the gauge must use a different one.

The sensor has 2 channels, one for the gauge and one for the ECU

My temp gauge died on me on my way home from the Northern meet last night. I'll give this a go. Cheers guys!

A word of warning, the replacement part number in the link didn't fit my 1998 S4. The sensor used on mine uses a different plug to connect it. Not sure if this applies to all pre-facelift cars.

If anyone reading this needs the replacement sensor mentioned in the other thread... PM me!

sounds a bit strange, it should be on the drivers side of the engine bay, 4 pin plug. passenger side is the after-run sensor

Yep, sounds right. How different is yours then? Are you able to post a picture?

my gauge sometimes reads 60 sometimes more but never 90, but if i use the climate control to go into channel 51 i can see it from cold go up to 90 and stay there in about 5 mins. So surely my gauge in the dash is faulty and not the sensor as channel51 would show low.?
this has always been the same since i bought the car too.

There is 2 channels on the sensor. One for the ECU (channel 51) and one for the gauge

Mark, ah so the sensor must be working ok on mine then, the dash gauge must be at fault.

No, one channel on the sensor appears to be working so you are getting a good reading on the ECU but the other is duff so the gauge is reading wrong.

Shame is I never logged my ECU reading before changing my sensor to know if that side of the sensor was fine or not. Car ran just the same after the change so I must assume it was OK

Having said all that I could be wrong, but it's not usually the gauge that fails
