Short shifter for S4

Post by Carps » Thu May 01, 2003 11:28 pm

First of all, hello from a newbie to the forum.

I have read back through a number of posts regarding shortshifters for the S4, and it seems that the choice is UCC or Tanoga.

Can someone fill me in on where these are available in the UK, and what I might expect to pay. Also, fitting difficulty.

For what it's worth, this is to go on a stock 2000 Nogaro Blue avant that I am picking up in a weeks time

Thanks in advance

Hello mate, welcome to the site.

Great choice of car

I have a tanoga shortshifer on my car which I am very happy with.

Not sure on the prices, tanoga (Karl) is a regular on here, so you can send him a private message for pricing and fitting info.

OK, found more info on the tuning and mods forum.
SO where do I buy a Tanoga from ? Seems that from the manu it is rather expensive (£215+vat) when compared with the price in the US ($260), so surely there is someone in the UK with better prices given that it is made here.

Also, how many fitted it themselves, and how difficult to get it set-up correctly ?

Thanks in advance

What car have you come from?

Golf GT TDI, jazz blue. (How close is that to nogaro ??? )
Took a lot to make the final push - going from 50mpg to 25mpg is going to hurt. But I guess that is the price for going from 110bhp to 265bhp
Just can't wait to pick it up now

25MPG on a good day - 'drive' it and you will be looking at 20MPG, track it and I imagine it would drop ito single figures ???

I bought my Tanoga directly from the factory. As David suggested perhaps you should give Karl a call at Tanoga in Luton or send him a message through this site.

Are you planning any other modifications in the future Carps?

Enjoy the S4

Carps,

I have read a few posts from people who have done a fitting themselves and I think it can be a bit difficult. Furthermore it really has to be done right or else the gearchange will be shorter but worse (probably due to the Audi gearbox rather than the short-shifter itself).

My shortshifter was fitted by AmD for £225 + VAT (part + fiting), although it is not a Tanoga. In fact I haven't a clue which make it is, but I don't care as it's great: No notchier than the stock shift but now I can shift just with wrist action instead of moving my whole arm).

The nearest recommended tuner to you would have to be Kim Collins' QS Tuning (previously Quattrosports), and I note from the website that he's offering a Tanoga for £250 + VAT (fitted I assume). Seems good value to me considering his location.

If Kim Collins prices do include fitting, Im up to have this done, do these things really make a difference when driving? It seems so according to those who have made the change. So Carps if you want maybe we could organise some sort of discount with the 2 of us booking to have the work done? Let me know what you think.

It really depends on the individual. I have met several S4 owners who didn't find the stock gearshift a problem. However I found it a pig from day 1. Because of the long throw I kept missing gear changes and got that horrible griding sound. I have no doubt that without the short-shifter my gearbox would be knackered by now.

IIRC the standard gear throw is about 6-7 cm? This can be reduced to about 4 cm. Yes it does make a big difference, but if you haven't found the long throw a problem yourself, then you're going to be less impressed by the short-shift than me!

Had my Tanoga shifter fitted yesterday, and just wanted to say 'thanks' to Karl and proclaim the wonderous device that has transformed the somewhat longwinded process that is shifting gear in a stock S4.
Shifts are nice and clean, and if anything the whole procedure feels smoother now than it did before.
Highly recommended...

Now for some suspension

You didn't mention which S4 you've got. Please don't post again.
