RE: Re: RE: look familiar........?
I agree with that and will be buying an RS4 now that the prices are a bit more realistic. I know you get what you pay for, all these toys are money pits.

A very honest appraisal Rob - and i agree with your conclusions about tuning again; i don't think i would go down this road again either, i also would either buy one already tuned or (as Graham says) aim for the top and get an RS and leave it stock.

RE: Re: RE: look familiar........?
I disagree
I purposely looked for a totally stock car (but with plenty of factory options), and I've enjoyed every minute of upgrading bit by bit - it's all been part of the fun of ownership for me
and it hasn't cost me a fortune.
The biggest outlay coming up is belts change and service, which is all part of routine maintenance. I won't be changing the turbos until the time is imminent, as I have more than enough power as it is.
When I move up to an RS4, I'll be looking for a completely stock one and I'm pretty sure my first mods will be better brakes and remap

RE: Re: RE: look familiar........?
Yes yes yes - the urge would still be there to modify - but less to do with an RS; by this i mean the expensive stuff like turbos, i/c's, brakes and suspension. I'd still have a re-map and good exhaust though.....

Deus ex machina
bit of a daft argument as you dont mod a car as an investment. Id do it again at the drop of a hat even tho i lost ££££.
once the modifying bug bites its very difficult to get rid of. Thats why i bought an N/A car after my S4 to remove any temptation for chipping etc etc, and even that hasnt worked (now looking at forced induction).
once funds become available ill be on my 2nd S4 with rs4/6 turbo conversion
the best thing is to buy what you can second hand.A second hand milltek will always be worth 250-300 so if your strip your car before you sell up then you can recover some £££

Clive - I know where you are coming from I really do. But although the car is a complete beast and ALWAYS brings a smile to face, in my current predicament, I think tuning and moding properly to my taste is outweighed by the cost...
In that respect it is easier to buy one already modded, or to leave one stock. In the case of my new acquisition (B6 S4 with Miltek etc), I have got one, that has been lightly modded and cannot be taken much further without serious cost.

Well andy1234 it wasn't really an argument per se - and i wasn't explicitly saying that you mod as investment - rather that the outlay of modding (very large) doesn't get anything back at all on resale. So to say "daft" is missing the point (and a bit condescending IMO)andy1234 wrote:bit of a daft argument as you dont mod a car as an investment. Each to their own - glad you enjoyed spending ££££ doing your mods - maybe you got more money than me.....good for you.

Quite right S4TAN - no argument here, just healthy debate and exchange of views.
As you say, each to his own - some prefer to buy a modded car, and there's a lot to be said for that in terms of cost as one thing's for sure, you can kiss goodbye to 90% of the money you spend on mods.
But if you're in for the long-term, as I am, then I think it is a good investment, and even though the monetary return may be negative, it gives me many more smiles per hour...
(cheesy I know, but true!)

im sorry you see that as condescending. I just thought you were stating the painfully obvious. you sound suprised that spending a load of money making a car into an absolute beast like robs doesnt necassarily mean you see a return? if you were expecting to get every pund that spent on your car back then you should probably stop before you get a bit of a suprise.
"each to their own - glad you enjoyed spending ££££ doing your mods - maybe you got more money than me.....good for you. "
I wasnt saying it in a big headed way, but i would rather spend a few 100 on my car then go and get wrecked every weekend. Ive heard a really good time modding cars over the past few years, but unfortunately buying a house means i gotta grow up for the moment. Also i probably dont have more money then you at the mo, or id still have my S4.
anyway, i hope rob gets a good price for his car, and may i take this opportunity for upsetting you Mr S4TAN.If theres anything else you would like to discuss, please pm me.
Cheers!

A well made point Clive - and yes; i absolutely agree that the "grin factor" of upping the cars performance is certainly a ROI of sorts (and let's face it; life is short and money is there to be enjoyed if you have it to spare!)
I too have enjoyed modding my car (although I have to admit that i am short on patience and want it all NOW!!) but i'm just weighing up the pros and cons of buying an S car and spending loads on mods as opposed to buying an RS car and spending less on mods....that was my original point really, and as it happens it seems that Tartan Rob (about whose car this thread originated) is of the same mind...

andy - me touchy? nah! and you haven't upset me - takes a lot more than that!
And no; i certainly don't expect to get "every pund" (sic) back that i spent on my car - i guess my point was that after the huge outlay that Tartan Rob spent on his undoubtedly great car (wish i had the same spec, that's for sure!) it seems a shame that he couldn't get a little bit extra back for all that work and monetary input, that's all.
As for stating the "painfully obvious" then maybe you misinterpreted my original comment - and hopefully my explanation above will clarify it for you.
BTW - the "Mr S4TAN" remark is a bit unnecessary don't you think? And as for the "....pm me" comment - is it meant to convey menace? Surely not.......
Anyway, whatever - i'm outta here!

Knowing both S4TAN and andy1234, I'm sure Julian is neither upset nor touchy and that Andy wasn't being menacing...

In closing, I have to agree that if I'd had the £30k+ to spare when I bought the S4 2 years ago, it would certainly have been RS4 time and less mods
