OK, I've been following this thread for some time, and my thinking is that it's the roof rails (assuming its an avant) - they make a siren-type of noise around 30-40mph ??

He could be serious

I agree with you Dippy. There is a big between a quiet turbine sound (normal) and a loud siren sound (not normal).

Course I'm serious, you said the noise came from the back of the car - unlikely to be the turbos then, unless it was a rear-engined S4 special ??

Funny... The RS6 Avant at Hockenheim made a whistling sound at speed, but the saloon didn't. You may be onto something here....

I didn't mention the back of the car ! Perhaps there is a misunderstanding as I said I looked round to tsee if there was a police car.
The noise was most definitely from the front. And it was noticable at very low speeds - ie, 0-20mph - as the revs built up. I was driving pretty normally and not accelerating hard or anything

OK. Thanks everyone for your responses.

I went to my local Audi dealer today and they gave me the full history for the car .
The bottom line is that the warranty will cost £765 (as previously mentioned). Because it is still in it's service schedule they will NOT need to inspect the car (saving £85). The warranty also includes Audi Roadside assist, which softens the blow a little bit.

I am now feeling a lot more settled, and am going ahead with the purchase.

Thanks again to everyone

You won't regret it mate, with the warranty in place all you need to worry about is the driving.

The S4 is a truely phenominal car, and the understated looks guarantee you plenty of traffic light fun!!!

I've had mine nearly a year now, and whilst I've considered tuning etc.. I don't think I'll mod it at all, I love it the way it is.

Enjoy!

Yes, you will have to get along to a meet as well . Check the Trackdays and Meets forum.

Enjoy.

I think you may be right - but only for the black roof rails.

I have the silver roof rails, and at high speed they make a screaming sound...

...or maybe it's coming from the wife in the passenger seat?

My new turbos have this whistling noise from the back, but mine's a saloon - no roof rails
