Hi mike,

go easy at audi garages mike ive never had good experiences with them really. If its on limp permanently that would suggest a possible boost leak or something else. If its done its MAF in again, that normally manifests itself as intermittent going on to limp, not permanently. I know its a trek from where you are mike but please consider going to MRC. You could save yourself a lot of bother in the long run, and any parts that are shafted will be covered by audi warranty.
Let me know how it gets on when its on the rollers when its sorted though. It should be :FIREdevil:

All the best guys,

Andy

If it does turn out to be the MAF, then you could do with finding out what is causing them to go. That will be the 3rd or 4th one that car has had this year. They do go every now and then in any S4, but that's ridiculous.

I know its daft. It wasn that much of a problem as the part was covered by the audi warranty. The only other thing is they may get funny if they realise that the cars not standard and may use that as a way to not honuor the warranty Hows your car doing neil BTW?

Car is running great... but I'm in the middle of buying a house so unfortunately it's staying exactly how it is for the next few months at least.
And mike, if it is going to be an issue getting new MAF sensors on warranty, it really might be worth speaking to MRC about putting the hitachi MAF in there, that should sort it.

If the MAF has been giving loads a grief then surely there is a possibilty the EGT sensors/Lambda probes are damaged?

This certianly does not sound like a problem a dealership should be looking into. Buy the MAF from them, fit yourself and drive the car gently till you get to a 2.7t specialist.

these have been done and would throw a fault on vagcom if they were fooked. As neil said the Hitachi unit is meant to be a lot more durable but there i thought you had to have the ECU recalibrated to run on the voltages that the hitachi maf puts out as they are slightly different?

@ neil, unlucky bout buying a house mate, getting mine on friday coming up (thats why the car had to go). I am soooooo poor right now :boohoo:

Interesting see the comments below by Misternomer on the post about his trip to MRC...
One thing I forgot to mention. Doug at MRC said that there was a very good reason why the MAF's are prone to failure on S4's and many other Audis. Apparently when Bosch developed the part they made it clear to Audi that they should not be solid mounted in line with the airbox. i.e. that they would need some sort of vibration damping between the airbox mounts and the [very fragile] MAF, which is just a hair thin wire suspended in a plastic housing.

Doug mentioned that MAF's seem to last longer on some S4 B5's which still have intact airbox mounts, i.e. the rubber damper is still intact and hasn't fallen out yet.
Seems that you may be suffering excess vibration perhaps?

On the Hitachi MAF topic, we haven't had enough time to work on this yet, the problem is that the MAF connector needs to be rewired and there might be issues with Euro cars that don't have ESP. We'll look more into this and if it is feasible, we'll post here once we can offer this upgrade to S4 owners!

Thanks,

Mihnea
