Part of the reason why I posted this is because until now, the only comparison I had with an M3 was on paper, and there would always be the arguement about which is faster. I have no doubt that the guy in the M3 was trying hard to win the sprint, and it is clear to me that my car comfortably wins a 0-100.

(P.S. to BenCole45, of course it is reasonable to compare a modded S4 to a stock M3. This is a real-world discussion, not an Audi vs BMW discussion).

BTW I "only" have a stage II, and my Miltek system is not the best one (not sure how many cells the cats have but I'm sure they're not 100, and I have the single pipe system, not the dual). I do not have gutted pre-cats, and I currently run Sainsbury's 97 RON WITHOUT any Millers. Also I am fairly convinced that my car is not as powerful as everyone else's because I have one of the last engines off the line which meets EU2 emissions regulations.

Finally I cannot possibly accept that a stock S4 would come close to an M3 on a sprint. Yes the torque is good, but the complete lack of power at the top end is a killer. Unless you are really good at changing gear at the right time, even a stage 1 with stock exhaust is going to fail in a 0-100.

Just different perspectives I supppose. The mitigating factor that makes the discussion more valid than your usual modded vs standard comparison (which IMHO is pointless) is that you can get big gains on a B5 S4 for a grand whereas a grand on an E46 M3 will net very little in comparison.

I'll say it again an e36 M3 is a good match for a standard S4. 1/4 mile times are very close, within a tenth or two of each other.

The later E43 M3 is a substantially quicker car and a good match for a stage II S4, depending on driver and version of M3 (smg<manual<csl) its a cars length or two either way. A std S4 messing with an E43 M3 will get a spanking.

I've had my B5 S4 in a few states of tune and have a few E46 M3 miles too and I agree with Kevin, a good stage 2 B5 S4 is a match, but the M3 'feels' quicker because of the nature of its power deliver.

KayGee - I didn't notice you were referring to an older model M3. I can't be bothered with these "E" numbers - they're supposed to be bad for you anyway :)

David, the M3 feels quicker because of the BMW badge on the front too :) In fact I have little doubt that the M3 driver that I beat has told his mates that he burned up an Audi S4, not because he was lying, but because his believed it was true: Remember that BMW drivers don't just think they have the best cars on the road, the KNOW it!

Yes we do  But BMW didn't do a twin turbo 4 wheel drive car so I had to get an Audi as well... Ah the sacrifices I have to make

I have to admit that as much as I rate my BMW I won't buy another. Most of the owners are more about flash IMHO

I much prefer the VAG following so will be moving over fully in the future. Just please remember not all BMW drivers are the same.

However, a statistical randon sampling of people will probably reveal that when a car is travelling 2 inches from your rear bumper, it'll be a BMW.

I once had one BMW driver projectile spitting at my car because I pulled out in front on him a bit sharpish. Lovely chap. I am sure he'll make a good father to his children.

There was the E36 EVO which had around 340BHP - that would give similar performance to the E46 and be equally a match for a stage II S4.

Just to throw a spanner in the works :-D
