Fuel Consumption figures

Post by saf » Sat May 06, 2006 12:31 am

My cars standard facelift model.

I been getting about 14 mpg and 160 miles till when the tank says ) miles. usually costs about 47 quid to fill up tank again.

My MAF is brand new. Car fault codes perfect. NO DTC's at all.

Why am I getting only 160 miles.

I do local driving 50%. 50% cruising at about 70 mph.

Even with this my friends car is remapped and it does 250.

Also this is what I get on every tank. Even if I do just local driving I should be getting at least 200.

I drove the car without putting my foot down once on a full tank, and by the time it dropped a quarter, I had only done 45 miles.

I know its not my right foot.

Any ideas anyone?

hmmm, iv just gone through the same mpg trial with mine. before the car shouts at me i can get 300 miles on a tank...again bout £50. Thats both town driving and mway. I drive it hard often and its been remapped by the boys at MRC to about 310-320 bhp. I noticed a large improvement after the remap (about 50-70 miles on a tank) maybe ur ecu's telling the car duff gen? Id get MRC to have a tinker. Just my 2p worth :)

Probably an O2 sensor, I get 240 tank from mine and it's a 400+ Bhp stage 3. Got VAGCom? Post some maf logs and O2 readings....

If i do all town driving I only get around 160 to a tank. the wife gets around 200 to a tank. That is mostly cold runing stuff, school run, youth club, you get the idea.

I do have one Lambda that is knackerd so that wont be helping

14mpg seems quite low... I do mixed town/local b road driving at the moment & I'm getting 21-25 with a lead right foot.. sounds like one of the sensors is faulty.. I would have suggested checking the MAF first lol

www.vastperformance.com will do you a pair of O2 (Lambda) sensors for about a £100. You should get that back in 5 tanks of fuel. Get local garage to fit them they are a major PITA to do yourself.

I do about 75% motorway driving at between 70 and 80 mph and I'm getting about 32mpg or a range of 420odd on a full tank. The least I have ever had on a tank was around 200 and that was me being daft and stupid all the time.

When I went to see Clive to pick up the RS4 rep wheels I was amazed to see how much improvement can be had by running at a steady speed on the motorway. I ended up with 350 miles for the tank, steady 70-80 up and +10 on the wayback.

check out your engine temp sensor--if this is up the duff it will run on cold start mixture all the time

mine averages 20/21 all the time 260 on a tank of optimax.

I get 450+ miles from an all-motorway tank of optimax, believe it or not!! my car does very little around town driving, but i average 25ish round town I think, when i'm being gentle. most miles are either A roads or Mway for me. I notice a real drop in mpg if i use sainsbury's 97RON..... i've never put 95 in it so i don't knowhow it would hold up under that. Optimax - good stuff (though it costs over 105p here in Cardiff OMFG!!!)

Thanks guys.

When you guys are saying a tank, do you mean when the on board computer reaches 0 miles and you fill up?

Thats about £50 worth usually. If thats the case and you guys are getting 250 miles or so, There has to be a problem with mine. 160 miles is not right for 50 quids fuel. Could it be that temp sensor is faulty but not showing up on DTC's vagcom?

I can believe some are getting that many miles on motorway mileage at a steady speed, as youre not using turbos. A few mates with S4's do very good mileage on motorway. Close to 400 miles on a tank if driven easy. They had figures of about 360 and 385 on full tank.

Town driving cant be that bad for me though. I refuse to believe 160 miles on a tank is right.

Im down MRC on Wednesday so ill get it checked out then. Judging by what you guys get, I need to get mine sorted.

Ill get the logs on Wednesday hopefully. Will have car remapped then to stage 2 custom with gutted pre cats.

Hopefuly it wont drink more.

I normally get about 19-20mpg just driving around town localy if i take it easy and only drops to about 17-18mpg if i drive it hard, i get around 28mpg on a motorway run. This is on a stock s4. I wasnt too happy with the fuel consuption when i first had it but apparently this is about right.

DTC doesn't show with temp sensor because they continue to give an output but an artificially low one or even worse an erratic one. This fools the engine to running around under cold start conditions (loads of fuel). Once the engine is warmed up engine wont run correctly as its getting too much fuel. Cheap + quick to fix, should be identifiable with VAGCom as well.

Trouble with town driving is car generally doesn't get upto temperarture either so 19-20 Mpg around town is about right. I do a 50 mile round trip to work, hence slightly better MPG.
