Wash Mitt
Wash Mitt
Well,
In keeping with the love and affection the previous owner bestowed upon my newly aquired RS4 i went out and bought a wash mitt,
How weird, i cant get on with it all, its just not normall? maybe the car was too dirty? and a quick throw over any other time of the year with a mitt maybe bitt this just made the job harder,
I,ve bought a grit guard now i can see the sense in that so i think i,ll just stick to a sponge and hopefully get rid of some grit out of the sponge by rubbing it on that,
How have others faired using a mitt, am i doing it all wrong,

RE: Wash Mitt
Honestly mate do not use a SPONGE! i have been detailing for a while now and this is the biggest sin. If u dont like the mit go for a smitt. Ill find u a link. Its a specially formulated sponge that will not cause damage. It sounds like marketing hype but loads of detailers have used them and now use them all the time. Ill get u a link.

RE: Wash Mitt
A "Schmitt" - come on guys!
A sponge is made of foam - a "Schmitt" is made of foam. Foam no matter how it's dressed up is foam...it will do all the things that have made the traditional sponge so despised.
Described as "evolutionary" - I don't think so, nor do any of my pro dertailer colleagues.
Perservere with the mitt Chalky. Is it a wool or microfibre mitt? It will work and it will most definately be kinder to your paint...it will probably work even better if your paint has had a decent wax or sealant applied.

RE: Wash Mitt
Looks like ill have to try and give it a go myself then mate, and report back. The swissol clener fluid by the way is amazing stuff. Ill be on to you about the BOS wax soon

jac-in-a-box,
I,m using a microfibre mitt, i must admitt the car is lacking in a decent coat of sealant, which will open an even bigger can of worms, i have always used KLASSE, polish with sealant glaze, due to the shocking winter weather i have yet to get stuck in to that but as far as the mitt goes, what would you suggest, fibre or wool ?
Cheers,
K

What exactly is the problem with it? I'm presuming you're wiping over the car and disparing about how much muck is on the mitt and therefore how to get rid of it all without putting it back on the car?
Always difficult when cars are really filthy, seems pretty frustrating. I'm no detailer but I find the following helps at this time of year.
Get one of these: Foam
Fill it with a good shampoo, cover the bugger and leave it for 10 minutes. I find it shifts a lot of the initial dirt.
Rinse with hose, not the pressure washer...
And don't use a sponge!

Chalky...
Microfibre washmitt's are the one's I prefer...wool ones tend to hold grit and can scratch - still better than a sponge or a Scmitt!
Klasse All-in-One is pretty good stuff and a very effective paint cleaner, I use it a lot on Silver cars as a pre-wax cleaner.
I assume the sealnt you refer to is Klasse SG? Again, it's not bad stuff - I prefer a premium quality wax.
Re. difficulties in using the mitt; is it a case of the the mitt "sticking" on the paint? If yes, you might find that your paint would benefit from a good claying...it's the bonded on cr*p that's dragging on the mitt.
I've got a couple of poorly written handouts on washing, claying and general car care available by email (PM an address) Seem to be found useful for those who've had them.

thanks for the info,
bobjebb, thats pretty mutch it with the mitt frustration in that the mitt is white and the car was filthy, i,ve looked at a few detailing sites and a few have suggested using two buckets one with clean luke warm water to rinse the dirt out of the mitt before dunking it in warm soapy clean uncontaminated suds, makes sense to me?
and the fact that there is no buffer between hand and surface, it feels weird having your hand in a cloth bag washing the car with the corners flapping about, a bit like the smITT site says really but dont worry i,m on to their evil ploy of tring to corner the market in people like myself who are used to big cack handed yellow sponges to wash their car, i will persaverewith the mitt.
jac-in-a-box
yes its the KLASSE SG that i use with the AIO, and the difficulties arent really from the mitt dragging its down to the above and maybe the shampoo that i,m using, AUTO GLYM, i,ve always had mixed reactions with this stuff sometimes it foams up and deteriorates by the time the bucket is only half used sometimes it just goes dead in the water and does nothing, i normally use car plan triplewax stuff but cant seem to get hold of any any the AG stuff came part of a valet case that i had bought for xmas, the case is good but the stuff inside isn,t gonna get used much,
