DetailingWorld: Paint Coatings Comparison Test

I love stuff like this.

[geek-mode] So this crazy Scandinavian decided to machine polish his Volvo, then divide it into 28 zones, apply a different coating to each one, and then track how they all perform over a period of time.

An interesting test for anyone considering one of these coatings:

Good news for anyone like me that splashed out for gtechniq CSL + EXO, it seems to outperform.

This is one of the pics showing dirt buildup on the bonnet...I was pretty surprised at the difference between the different coatings! Also compare protected areas to how dirty the unprotected areas are (the tape lines between the zones).

It's also interesting that EXOv2 on its own doesn't seem to last as long as it should, but does much better when layered over CSL. The gtechniq MD offered the tester some EXOv3 recently so will be interesting to see if he tests that too. [/geek-mode]

Good find Faisal, I'm a sucker for this stuff too.

Detailing World is a good forum.

I'm still convinced the coating Surrey Sam had put on his Avant is still holding up well.

Hope Gtechniq have sorted the etching problem people occasionally get. It was a nightmare to remove from the Q5 we had here, it took many passes with a hard foam pad and Menz 400 compound. Anymore problems with yours Faisal since KDS had to redo it?

Decided I'm going back to waxes this year, as I think I prefer the look. Can't deny that these modern coatings do provide lower maintenance for cleaning though.

I've had no problem so far with EXO v3 (although still relatively early days I'd say - it was applied in the summer).

I get some comfort from the fact that I've had direct contact from the gtechniq MD about the etching I had on V2, his assurance that V3 doesn't have the same issue, his willingness to help and contribute to putting it right, and finally a warranty on the product in my name this time!

We had this on our Macan, it has completely put me off GTechniq. On that occasion their support was to suggest applying more. Errrr, no thanks.

I seem to recall Obsidian are based in Manchester (Oldham?) and highly regarded on the RS3 forum. The guy is called Matt. Not sure if he does gtechniq though.

Balls. Had that too. Assumed it was my fault. Evidently not!

Yeah but for some reason it was only showing a white popup. Tried it again and working fine. Went to check out Central Detailing in Manchester near the Apollo theatre. Seems like a good place.
