according to the letter of the law (afaik) you can only have those black an white plates on cars reg'd pre 1971 (and possibly military forces ehicles, but not sure about these as i dont drive one!).
I used to have a mk1 Ford Cortina GT (1964 reg!) and made a few enquiries at the time to see if i could get away with a black reg plate.
