2 brands of ordinary window cleaner
White vinegar and newspaper
Meths
White spirit
Engine degreaser (dabbed onto a cloth)
Proprietary foam glass cleaner
Good ol' soap and water
Nothing worked . . . . . . . until

I found a tub of leather degreaser we had used for cleaning up a sofa. It's a sort of gel that is applied to the surface and then rapidly dries to a powder whist absorbing organic grease. Took a bit of elbow grease (excuse the pun) getting it off (bit like when you leave car wax on a bit too long) but I can see clearly now !
