How-to help please - Warning : Red Tape inside!

Does anyone have experience of dealing with the finer points of the DVLA plate transfer process please?

The situation :-

A car has a personalised reg;
The car is being sold and the current owner wishes to retain his personalised reg (on a retention certificate);
The buyer already has his own personalised reg (on a retention certificate) which he wants to transfer onto the vehicle he's buying.

I can see that a "V317" is required (and a fee paid) to transfer the existing reg onto a retention certificate, and the existing retention certificate (to be transferred onto the vehicle) simply needs to be completed.

Question : is it possible to make a visit to the local DVLA office to make a simultaneous transfer of the 2 registrations (ie without involving an intermediate reg number, tax disc, and plate)?

Clive, not sure if you'v got the answer now

i basically go to the DVAL every bloody week to transfer my reg (not literally)

It is possible to do all in one transaction
- transfer ownership of the car
- put your plate on retention
- put new owners plate on the car

BUT cannot be done at the DVLA, needs to be done through the post

Process is.

on V5, fill out new keeper details
on V317 put registered keeper down as new owner
put grantee (the person who has rights to the plate) as you
on the new owners Reg certificatate fill out the details of his new car (your old)

Thanks David :thumbs:

So in the meantime, the car which the reg is coming off drives around with the existing plate until receiving the notification of transfer (and new V5) from DVLA?

yes until you receive docs, the reg stays on
