Im sure this has been covered before, but a quick search didn’t reveal it, so here goes.
My car has an emissions level of 350 g/km and so is in one of the highest bands of the new system.
The road tax for this will be £425 from mar 1st 2010.
Its currently taxed until end of September, but in order to postpone the £425 expenditure for a few more months I am intending to cancel the tax in late January and re-tax for Feb 1st at the current level of £220-ish.
Can anyone see a potential problem to this e.g. having to leave a few days for the system to be updated, or the government specifically stopping this type of “deliberate tax avoidanceâ€

*Band K includes cars that have a CO2 figure over 225g/km but were registered before 23 March 2006.
VED Rates for band K is £245 PA, better than £425, as far as loophole, it was mentioned at the time the new rates came out about trying to delay the higher rate and finding a way to stop it.

yep - definitely bad news.
it will effect all cars registered after 1st march 2001 (not april 2001), so Y plate or later
mine is band M and will cost 435 pounds after April 2010

Cars registered on or after 1 March 2001 (based on fuel type and CO2 emissions)
The rates shown only apply to cars that have been type approved in category M1 and registered on the basis of CO2 emissions measured in grams per kilometre (g/km) driven. These details are shown on the registration certificate (V5C).
From 1 May 2009, Vehicle tax rates for cars registered on or after 1 March 2001 are split into 13 bands depending on CO2 emissions. The amount you'll pay depends on which band your car is in. The lower a car’s emissions, the lower the vehicle tax payable on it.
These bands and rates apply to all tax discs bought from 1 May 2009 onwards.

I read this that car registered before 23/3/06 over 225 will be taxed in band K regardless of output. As this has applied since 1/5/09 (thought it was before that) would other owners not already have seen this increase? I still sincerely hope you are incorrect

That's exactly how I read it, if your car is in band K and registered before 23rd March 2006 you will stay in Band K. When the changes were first introduced this was not the case but they eventually saw sense and decided its unfair (first time for everything)..
Anyway my 2005 S4 currently has £210 tax disc on it and emissions above 225g/km.

its all coming clear now...thankfully i was wrong - i think you're correct with the band K including cars registered between 1st Mar 2001 and 23 March 2006, but higher than 225g/km.
the figures applicable from 1st Mar 2010 are slightly higher than those quoted above, so band K will be 235 pounds
thats a relief..phew
