I’ve just read this: http://www.admiral.com/yourPolicy/pdf/ADM.pdf

They won’t cover any modifications unless they form part of the manufacturers standard specification or are optional extras that we have agreed to cover.

Admiral does not cover any non-standard parts (modifications) or anything that alters the performance of your car. If you make a claim for loss of or damage to your car, we will only pay the cost of replacing parts needed for your car to meet the manufacturers standard specification. Manufacturers optional extras are only covered if they have been declared and we have agreed to cover them.

I've added these as they are funny....

They also won’t cover you as a result of war, invasion, terrorism, act of foreign enemy, hostilities (whether war be declared or not), civil war, rebellion, revolution, insurrection or military usurped power or confiscation or public authority action except so far as is necessary to meet requirements of the road traffic acts.

Earthquakes

Riot or Civil commotion outside Great Britain, the isle of Man or the channel islands.

Ionising radiations or contamination by radioactivity from any nuclear fuel, or any nuclear waste from the combustion of nuclear fuel or the radioactive, toxic, explosive or other hazardous properties of any explosive nuclear assembly or nuclear component thereof.

Yup, standard for Admiral group policies (Elephant etc). Why you really need a specialist broker once you start adding expensive parts to your car.

Reading what the OP said that seems to me that a modded car is covered but they will only put back to standard in the event of damage???

Have I interpreted that correctly?

Exactly how I understand it (assuming the mods were declared of course).

If that is a direct copy of the small print - had a quick look but couldn't see it - then is that "declared or not" they won't cover replacement anyway!?

Don't follow your last question, but you should find your answers here:

http://www.admiral.com/yourPolicy/pdf/ADM.pdf

Page 28 of the PDF (page 27 on the document) is what we are discussing I think.

Is it not the case that at least Admiral will cover the car with performance mods ? At least Admiral will insure a car that has a Stage1 upgrade for example - most Insurers I contacted would not provide insurance cover at all for a Stage1.

Funny you should say that cause i've just rang up to see how much to add some mods to my policy but they won't insure it with uprated intercoolers and a remap !!!!!

I've been with them for 4 years and they've always been good and competitive.

I said to them, "Well, i better start looking for a new insurance company" and they weren't even bothered !! f**k EM !!

So, looking for new insurance now ? Who's good with mods on Audi's ??

Did you get someone on the phone who at least had an idea of what you were asking for?

I have been with Admiral or one of their offshoots for about the same length of time and depending on who you speak to remaps aren't covered yet chipping is - where they do seem to draw the line is when the power increase is over 25%.

Well, with airfilter, remap, exhaust and intercoolers would be about 30% increase in power

I've just got back from a 3 week trip with work to find out that Admiral have cancelled my policy....

I had one letter stating that as I had not provided them with a copy of my licence as they had requested (they hadn't!) I had seven days to do this or they would cancel.

Obviously, seven days later another letter was sent to me informing me of the cancellation.

I got back late on Friday and phoned them immediately. I got through to "Thomas" who I don't believe for a minute was in a UK call centre, and was as much use as a chocolate teapot.

He explained to me that I was wrong, and that I had been told to give them a copy of my licence (not true)

He told me that the request had been made because I made a false statement when obtaining the quote (not true)

Apparently, although I had disclosed one SP30 on my quote, I had not confirmed this when on the telephone to them, and therefore it was my fault all along.

He explained that if I paid them a further £45 they would than re-instate my policy, although I wasn't happy with this I was kind of over a barrel, he then went on to tell me that after paying this £45 he would then have to re-calculate my premium due to the new offence.

Strangely enough he could not understand my reluctance to pay this fee before he would tell me how much my premium would increase by, would not let me speak to his supervisor, and in general couldn't really care less about my frustration.

Anyway the short version is that the policy will remain cancelled (if they want the documents back thay can send me a SAE), I have now moved elsewhere and to boot have saved £150.

After speaking to people about this incident I have discovered an alarming amount of people with similar stories.

Strikes me that they are a shower of s****s who will use any excuse, real or fictional, to cancel a policy and I would not trust them with a modded car as far as I could throw them (which, the mood I'm in might actually be quite far  )

Apologies for the long post, at least its off my chest now.

write to the insurance ombudsman today. thats a friggin disgrace. these mainline insurance companies bitch and moan about their million pound profits then will do anything to get out of a policy or a quote.
