Certification of Security Devices

Post by travs » Mon Nov 26, 2007 10:26 pm

Hi all,
I have just renewed my insurance through greenlight due to recommendations on here - cheers all as it saved me just under £300!

Anyway, on the V5 the car is stated as "declared new in GB by Independent Importer".
Greenlight said the underwriters needed some confirmation from Audi that the car was brought in from inside the EU so I duly contacted Audi Uk. They said it wasn't on their database but looked it up in Germany and confirmed it was sourced from there. As if it was going to be any different but I needed to make sure for the insurance co.'s sake.

The insurnace company also want confirmation that the security devices are Thatcham 1 or 2 as the policy depends on this. Not being a UK car means Audi UK can't confirm this either.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Audi UK did give me a number for Audi germany so is there anything else I can do besides contact them?

Any advice appraciated.

Cheers

This link to the Thatcham site may help - click the CAT1 or CAT2 links on the left and then click the "Approved Devices" and read the adobe report to find you car derivative.

http://www.thatcham.org/security/index. ... =75&c=cat1

I would have thought that it would have been the same whether the car was buikt for the German or the UK market.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the tips and the links.

I contacted Audi Germany and they essentially passed it onto Audi UK. I've received a letter from them today saying that "because the vehicle is imported from Germany it will not match UK specification, as each country's specification differ".
however, no-one at Audi seems to have looked at what security features have been fitted to the car, which, I take it I would be able to have verified and confirmed if someone were to just look at the car.

It appears Audi are just trying to distance themselves from a legal confirmation tham may come back to them, which rather irritates....

Would I be able to contact Thatcham and ask if they have assessors which would be able to come and look at the car and confirm that the devices Audi say are on the car are fitted? Or could I get someone else to?

All I want is someone to tell me what is on the car rather than what isn't.....

I am having similar issues with Audi UK, 'as my car is over 10 years old and not on the database' Thatcham also dont recognise the car for age reasons... I am negotiating the insurance company (direct line) accept the manufacturers description of the alarm from the handbook, coupled with thatcham's descriptions of cat2 to show equivalence.... Unless anyone has a better idea.

Is yours an import also DH? Or a standard UK supplied car?

Surely no-one else has this problem?

I'm getting nowhere with Audi UK and can only hope that having someone inspect the car and state what is on there is acceptable to the insurance company.

My car is a uk spec RS2 all standard with factory alarm/immob. On another thread alastairg suggested that this was a Thatcham cat2 system, but Thatcham tell me they have no record of testing any Audi systems that old. They said my best bet was to go back to audi uk... Might have to change insurer now as a result....

I wonder if there are any German owners either here or on one of the other forums who could look up or advise on the spec form their car or via a dealership? Might be worth posting a new thread "Any German S/RS owners about" or similar?

Did you buy the car from a dealership in Germany or a private seller over there....might be worth trying to contact the dealership or maybe the import agency if you used one?

Why not check in the service book and see what option numbers your car was fitted with, then confirm the alarm / immobiliser option is the same for both German and UK cars, possibly backed up by parts numbers from ETKA.

There is also a sticker (in the boot area if I recall correctly) that lists the options ordered / fitted by the factory.

Just a thought. At least this way you don't need confirmation from AUK, but confirm what the car actually has...

I'm lucky as Audi UK has managed to confirm that my devices are the same as UK dealers so my Insurance company will be satisfied. I'm a bit surprised that Audi no longer has the data archived somewhere - you'd think it wouldn't be much of a cost for them to do this for exactly DH's scenario.

I didn't want to get an alarm or have to muck around with it personally and I would think the Insurance company would probably not accept the stickers or log book as these may well be able to be "amended"? In the same way an auditable point of view would require corroboration from a 3rd party.
