What's your AC temp?

Forget the BHP, FATS and MAX MAF readings, I want to know your AC temps!!
Never had reason to question the AC in the S4, blows cold and failry quickly and seems about the same as all my other cars but my girlfriend reckons her Golf blows colder and having tried a few direct comparisons I might be inclined to agree. Certainly blows colder quicker anyway.
Having checked the temp at the "fresh air blower" (no.60) using the climate diagnotics:
http://www.audiworld.com/tech/int5.shtml
I get a reading of about 1.7C. I figure the air can't come out much colder than that (so it must be ok), but what reading do you get (running at full pelt)?
As an aside , I'm not keen to let any old garage have a go at topping up the AC coolant I want it done properly if required, with the right measure of oil replaced etc.
My local Audi dealer wants £89 inc vat for a ac service which isn't so bad, but can anyone recommend a AC specialist in the Bucks/Oxon area? - just in case I decide I cant have the Golf outdoing the S4!

Well G I did you test..... BUT.....
It did not work out at all as you suggested.
My Car read normal ambient temp 24.c
Then it immediately went down to colder temps 8-9 on full having pressed the fan button to go to max.
I ten toyed with the controls and reduced the fan slightly to get the air down to 6-7.c
So is my air con working properly?
Are you sure your car had a decimal point as 1.7.c is significantly colder that a fridge ad would cause hyperthermia?
Is you car reading 17.c as opposed to 1.7?
Any one else care to take the Air Con challenge.
I expect the vw is not as good.
6-7-8-9 is quite cold really.

Sorry I think that link is for pre 2000 B5 S4s. I have to admit its a bit hit and miss trying to figure out the readings.
I think I assumed the decimal point by the way the reading was on my display. The first numeric was bigger than the second (like the .5 is on the pre-facelift temp display). I recall something like it reading 2 (large number) then after running for a while 1 (large) 9 (small) so I assumed it had gone from 2 to 1.9. Certainly too cold to be 20 and 19.
I actually got inthe car today to go and have an AC service but the AC was blowing so cold I didn't bother!
Cooler outside temps today but it was reading 9 (small).
I agree the temps sound very low but this is with the the cliamte on LO and full fan speed. The measure I am using is not the internal temp but the temp at the vents and with your hand over the vent you can't keep it there too long. Just the same thing in the Golf could give my fingers frost bite!
Maybe the Golf (newer) is better, maybe a service on the S4 would equalise them.....suppose if i want to find out I'll have to get it done regardless!
I'll try again tonight though and vary the temperature and figure out what those figures really are.

I'm going to try mine soon and also plan to get it recharged today. I'll post results later

Here's my results...
Aircon set to LO max fan speed
On dash display gave 22
Took the car to be re-gassed... His reading before starting 15 degC from the centre vent
45 minutes later... 7 degC and still falling as he removed the meter.
On dash display now 12
Not sure what the on dash display is showing but I can say the Aircon on my car now works SOOO much better.

How much did you pay for the Re-gas? Where did you go?
Was it a proper reclaim of the gas, vacuum, pressure test and refill (with oil)?

Never knew MRC did it, would have had it done while there otherwise.

Mine is a facelift

Just under £45 @ Kwikfit
Was it a proper reclaim of the gas, vacuum, pressure test and refill (with oil)?
Yes. reclaimed the gas and oil, vacuum check then refilled with the correct amounts. All automated by the machine.

Such a good price, sounds like the process was good, but still scared to use Kwik Fit! You're not the first person I've heard go their for an aircon service though, I think their price is attracting a lot of attention.

I was worried but stayed with the car and can't fault them.

Right. Done my own test again. As we thought, the decimal point assumption was just my mistake. The figures I took yesterday must have been 17 not 1.7.
Today running on LO on full pelt I saw the figure start around 12 quickly dropping to 9 and after say a minute down to 7 at which point I left the car as it was really a little uncomfortable!
It's not as hot as Sunday when I first tried (about 27C I think), but I didn't leave it on that long I don't think. It was 21.0C outside when I got this last reading so it looks like the result is ok, compared to FlashyG and Mark's freshly charged results.
Need another really hot day to see if it can still reach that low.

just tried mine and it's reading 24 but looking at the list it says 60 is the ambient temp at the fresh air blower so wouldn't that be reading the incoming air temp?
