RS5 B8.5 35,000 Mile Engine Failure

Post by NSteel » Tue Dec 17, 2019 12:04 am

Hi guys,
I purchased my 2014 RS5 B8.5 last year as I have always wanted to own a V8 and loved the shape of the RS5.
I love the car. It has full service history including premature gear box services and when I purchased it with 26,500 miles on it with one owner I thought I had checked as much as possible.
However,
Engine light came on at 30mph and car was rocking from side to side. I pulled and listened to engine and it sounded as if it was misfiring.
I called my local VAG specialist that I trust with my other vehicles and he said don't drive it, recovery it to him as it could be a possible Cylinder shutdown.
After a compression test it was found that Cylinder 4 had shutdown.
My VAG specialist recommended that I speak to my local Audi dealer as this shouldnt happen at such low mileage. These engines suffer from carbon build up but it should be fairly even and cause loss of power.
I spoke to Audi Portsmouth who were very understanding but explained even though I am out of warranty, Audi UK should offer a Goodwill gesture, but only if Audi Portsmouth complete the inspections.
I knew this was going to be expensive but had little option.
Audi Portsmouth confirmed Cylinder 4 had failed due to excessive carbon build up on the valve and valve spring had failed.
Audi Portsmouth stated the retail price on the work was £11500 inc VAT but they would give me a £2500 discount as a goodwill leaving £8500 to pay, but they advised me to speak to Audi UK as they should contribute as well.
All I can say is that Audi UK were an absolute nightmare. Not returning calls, not communicating to Audi Portsmouth to the point that the car was on a ramp for 2 weeks and Audi Portsmouth were threatening me with ramp fees of £800 per day while I waited for Audi UK to make a decision.
The decision was no goodwill gesture and the Customer Relations Manager mentioned that with a high performance car is always expensive to maintain and I should of taken up an extended warranty........." I understand high maintenance but an engine rebuild every 35,000 is not bloody maintenance, especially due to an internal engine component failing so early).
I spoke to the Ombudsman and they stated as I had no warranty they cannot help.
Has anyone else had a similar experience or knows of another route I can take to push this further as I am disgusted that such a supposedly reputable company on one of the prestige high performance models can wave away the fact it has failed so early in life.

Thanks for listening. All comments and ideas welcome.

Sorry to hear this and certainly everyones worst nightmare when owning a high performance car.

Is it worth ringing your insurance company? No experience of whether a claim could be made but worth a go.

Other than that I'd think you'll just have to bite the bullet and get the car back to the independent to perform the work which surely will be significantly less than the Audi quoted price.

All the best with it. I'll certainly be renewing my warranty when it's up.
