B7 rs4 avant de-chrome

Post by cov73 » Tue Jun 11, 2019 4:12 pm

I was after some advice about de-chroming my b7 avant and wondered what's the best way to go about it.

Is it best to get the chrome parts ie window frames, grille, roof rails wrapped or professionaly sprayed? Is there a like for like kit available to swap the parts over? I was after a gloss black finish.

Cheers.

Most common way to do it is spray the grill and wrap the window trim and rails.

I swapped my rails as it isn’t that big a job, I also got my window trims wrapped as a back hander but wish I had paid do get it done right the first time, I will do in time.

A few folk have gone gloss black and regretted it, might be worth thinking about before going through with it.

I replace my grille with a genuine black one then sprayed the window trims. I had the wing mirrors sprayed titanium at the same time.

Thanks for the advice.

Would matt black be a better option then? Do you have to drop the headlining to remove the rails as I can't seem to see any caps covering fixings etc

What colour did you opt for? Did you have to use special primer?

Cheers.

I think so personally but it depends on the look you want and the colour of your car.

Part of it yes, here’s the guide I followed.

Just stripped it down again tonight as it’s going on to the body Shop next week and trying to save myself a pound or two.

That's great. I'll have a look through that when I get 5. I've actually had the headlining down before as I swapped the sunroof over as it was damaged. It shouldn't be to bad a job. I'd rather have the rails off if they're going to be wrapped.

I think ill go for matt black now.

If you are going to the effort of removing the rails, why not replace them with black optics rails.

The windows became matt black. Not sure about any primer as I took it to a body Shop to do the works.

All I can see on eBay is rails for roof box's and a few for a4's in silver. I might just take them off and get them wrapped.

Same here . Along with the rest of the window surrounds . Except the rear quarter window as that has the rubber built into it so I used my silver one and etched primed it and sprayed it black . Btw you also have to cut it at an angle to match the black optics surround .
