A nightmare after one day of ownership
Hi everyone,
After collecting a b7 rs4 on Saturday and having it towed away a day later, this is not the first post I thought I’d be writing and I am absolutely broken. After spending all my hard earned cash on what I thought to be a great example of a b7 rs4 I’m now having a hard time figuring out what has happened. So the car had done 83000 miles and prior to me getting it, it had a large amount of maintenance carried out on the engine, I’ll get into that later. Anyway I picked up the car Saturday drove it approximately 70 miles that day and Sunday, and on Sunday all of a sudden the engine management light started flashing the car started juddering and a knocking and squealing noise started coming from the engine bay. I pulled over and rang the garage I had bought it from, it was then recovered to them and they started to diagnose the problem. They originally thought it was the timing chain but called me in today to tell me they oil sump had been hit a part had been broken and the engine had been starved of oil meaning it’s dead. They have said I’m completely liable for it. Hand on heart I did not hit anything there is no damage anywhere else on the underside of the car that is consistent with this. My question to you is have you heard of anything like this happening ? Does this sound reasonable on an rs4 or am I being taken for a ride ? The next step is an independent investigation but just wondered if anyone had any thoughts

That sounds terrible, feel for you.
I would suggest it is very unlikely that you damaged the sump without knowing. Do you have an advert from your sale so that we can see which car it was.
What details do you have on the maintenance? Do you have the advert from when you purchased it, I recall seeing a non runner or poor runner Daytona Avant for sale recently.

Sounds like they are trying to screw you over? Was oil pissing out of it when it was towed away?
How can they have thought it was the timing chain at first? A smashed sump pouring oil out would stand out a mile. You would have needed to have smashed it to pieces to lose two or three litres that fast? Did the yellow or red oil level warning bleep and pop up on the dashboard?

So the sump wasn’t smashed it was dented, causing internal damage meaning oil couldn’t get to the engine and instead some crud got sucked up there, I don’t have the original advert it’s a sprint blue saloon, here is the list of work:
New Timing Chains/ Tensioners & Guides, Both Cylinder Head's De-coked Pressure Tested & Skimmed, New Gaskets/ Valve Stem Seals (32), New Clutch & Flywheel, All Front Suspension Including Shock Absorbers/ Upper/Lower Arms & Drop Links, Full Service Including Spark plugs, Electronic Engine Mounts

Its not a dry sumped engine though is it? There is a great big pool of oil sitting in the bottom of the 4.2. You are never going to be able to knock the sump hard enough to deform it and block the oil intake without splitting the sump (and seeing oil come out)
If the oil pick up has failed, that is not accident damaged, that is not your fault.
Sounds like you have a fight on your hands, probably best to go see the car and inspect the alleged damage for yourself

Yeah you’re right, I’ve been down to inspect it there is a dent in the sump, but there is no damage to the paint at all either also the cover over it doesn’t appear to have a fresh mark on it, I just can’t see how I could of caused such damage without knowing it. Anyway first thing in the morning I’ll be ringing insurance and specialists to try and get it inspected asap, appreciate the help

You need to ask how long ago/ miles the engine related work was carried out . Was that was the cause of the engine failure ?

The work was done in the last 200 miles they have said they don’t believe the work they did is the cause. They are saying it all happened within about 30 seconds of the trauma, I just can’t believe it could be that bad and I don’t notice anything

So the garage yku bought it from / inspected it were the same garage that carried out a lot of engjne work 200 miles ago? My money is on the fault being caused by something they did.

Yeah I’m trying to sort an inspection today, any suggestions as to who to get ? Never had to do this before

If they recently done all that engine work why would there be crud in the sump? Surely that would have been cleaned out during the rebuild. I'd be down there getting a photo of inside the sump. Also if the dent is not near the pick up pipe it shouldn't have a catastrophic affect, unless the dent is massive, and you'd have known if you caused that.

Get your money back. It is against the law to sell an unroadworthy car. Your proof is how long you had it and how many miles you did. You can provide it as the miles will be on the bill of sale and on the clock. I would go and see the dealer and insist on a full refund, if they refuse put in writing and go and see a solicitor.

I rejected the car yesterday and they refused as they believe it to be me who has caused the issue. I've contacted a specialist to try and look at the engine and get a second opinion before going any further. From the conversations i've had with them they reckon its the oil pickup that has failed and the hit to the sump has nothing to do with it

Positive news then. No way you can be liable for an internal engine component failure. Was there the standard 3 month's warranty included with the sale?
Hold off on "naming & shaming" atm, it'll only piss the garage off and they could well dig their heels in more....if after an independent has examined and they still won't budge, release HOLY HELL!!

Yeah they garage has given a 12 month warranty with themselves, but this isn't covered as they believe it to be me. Yeah im not going to do that until there is a resolution. They are saying they will honor whatever the result is of the independent inspection. I am just worried they can influence it. The car is currently in their workshop and i don't know what they could have done, all i have is their word
