B7 RS4 or B8 S4
Hello, I am looking to buy either a B7 RS4 or B8 S4 in July. I have upto £16,000. This is going to mean a fairly aged RS4 (2006?) or slightly newer S4 (2010?)
From the knowledgable folks on this forum, what are the pros and cons of these cars? I guess the B7 is going to be more costly on maintenance for starters and seems to be more horror stories floating about.
Thx

Rs4 all day long. Excellent motors and realistically not that expensive to maintain if all of the common faults have been rectified. Engines and gearbox are bulletproof. I have mine for sale at them moment as im buying a house. What spec rs4 would you be after?

Hi chriswhite1992 - the answer to that is the best spec I can get for £16k, but would prefer manual, full leather, heated etc. Looking to purchase around second week of July.

After driving a both a b7 and b8 rs4 (appreciate you're looking at a s4) I would recommend driving them and buying which one suited your requirements and made you feel special
Re: B7 RS4 or B8 S4
I was in the same pace last month..my brother has a stage 2 s4 2010..and its allot quicker then the rs4 that I have..and it being newer also has the gizmos like suspension setup etc...
But it just looks like a normal audi...
I got myself a rs4...as iv always wanted one....maybe next year il change for a rs6...

Re: B7 RS4 or B8 S4
B7 RS4 is only available in manual.
B8 S4 is DSG or Manual.
I drive a 2011 B8 S4
For 16k you will be looking for an early car. 2009 2010 model year with reasonable miles. Personally I would keep away from the early DSG cars. The manuals are more to tax as on 6 gears but much more tuneable due to not having to worry about the weak DSG boxes.

Re: B7 RS4 or B8 S4
No ones really mentioned that for 16k any RS4 you find will be either leggy or need some work. IMO you certainly won't find one for the same price as a B8 S4 in the same condition.
Re: B7 RS4 or B8 S4
Also keep in mind that the RS4 may actually cost you less over your entire ownership of the car. Nobody has mentioned the (usually) biggest cost of owning a car; depreciation.
But I'd agree with others; you need to drive both if unsure.
Also keep in mind, they don't make manual, V8, quattros anymore.

As above, RS4 for 16k... Def buyer beware!! So think you have made your mind up already! B8 S4 for you, unless you want to sink some money into the RS4

Looks alone IMHO:

Re: B7 RS4 or B8 S4
There aren't any Audi's (excluding) the R8 that steer as well as the B7. The B8 S4 is a little vague. Really depends on what you want, but once you've driven both you will know the answer.
Re: B7 RS4 or B8 S4
Having driven both cars but only owned one which is my B7 RS4 I currently own I would definitely say B7 RS4. But as other members have stated one for £16k will more than likely need some work done. Most B7 RS4's with all the expensive work done to them will tend to go for more than £16k. Might get a higher mileage one with all the big bills taken care of for close to that price or somebody desperate to sell quick so you may be lucky but be aware of the common expensive repairs for the B7 RS4.
The B8 S4 is a good car but didn't get the same feeling driving it as I get driving the B7 RS4 even though it is an older beast.
