C5 RS6 Avant - Tyre Sidewall

Hi all,

Just got my RS back after a fresh service and new front brakes on Monday.

Took it for a quick 20 miles last night and drove to work this morning.

Then, to my horror, noticed just now that one of the rear tyres was well and truly flat :bash:

I have pumped it back up to the stated pressure and the top of the sidewall is marked and the lettering has been slightly worn away.

Unfortunately, the rear tyres have 5mm left and I did not want to replace them after just paying for the brakes.

So, I assume that I should replace both of the rear tyres for safety and could keep the part worn one as a spare.

My question to you all is; I am currently running Bridgestone Potenza RE05A 255 35 19 all round, should I replace the rears with the same, or should I go down the Michelin Pilot Sport route?

Thanks in advance!
Chris

Tombstones. You've failed. Put GY F1s on or MPSS.

Stick a photo on or get the tyre checked. It may be repairable if not too far gone. Then replace the pair.

I thought Bridgestone was a decent make

Sorry Bam - meant Tombstones :bash:

Accepting the risk of showing myself to be a total noob - what's with all the hate towards Bridgestone?

Also, what tyre would be best for the C5 from Michelin; Pilot Super Sport XL, Pilot Sport 4 XL or Pilot Sport 3 DT1 A0 XL? - again forgive my lack of tyre knowledge!!

Cheers guys

My wife has pontenza run flats on her 330D.

I don't like them...

They snap to easy with no real warnings. So don't inspire confidence. I'd rather a bit of slide first!

So, here's what one should look like;

And here's the knackered one;

Well your in for a pair of tyres then mate. I'm not sure what the hate it for Bridgestone. I like you thought they were a decent tyre. As far as having them with run flats I'm afraid it's the run flat that makes them poor. The side walls are so hard they make the ride harsh and they just don't perform as well.

Tombstones are <beep> for the C5, Amanada swore by them, nuff said, full stop.
Put the Mitchy PSS (MPSS) on and forget'boutit. However, the way you've worn the the knuckle off that tyre is a worry, what pressure was in the that tyre? Should be between 40psi and 44psi. Are you running spacers? Is your suspension copacetic? Had an alignment done?

Thanks for the info Bam - useful to know - to be honest, I have found the Bridgestones to grip reasonably, so will be interested to see how the PSS affect the handling!

It has only worn like that because I drove it while it had very little pressure and didn't notice any difference to handling or the ride quality :bash: - I know, idiot!! I check my tyres weekly and are all kept at 40PSI.

Suspension is all in good order, no spacers, I believe an 4 wheel alignment was done last year with the new tyres.

Now, 2 questions;

1. Do I need to get the Michelin Pilot Super Sport XL's with a 96Y load rating or the standard PSS with 92Y load rating?
I imagine it would be the XL, but would like to confirm with people that have the experience/knowledge, before I buy!

2. My front tyres are running the same Bridgestones and have 4mm of tread left and the rears have 5mm of tread left.
Should I replace just both of the rears, or replace all 4 to keep the same tread pattern on all four corners?
Or, if I wanted to save money short term, could I just buy one replacement Bridgestone for the faulty tyre for now, or would it cause issues having one tyre with 8mm and the other on the same axle having 5mm?

Cheers

96y. You could just buy 4 new ones and add some of the cost to the sale price.

Thanks for the confirmation!

I could do, but I've already raised the price significantly due to the new front discs, pads and service, so raising it again for the tyres is going to put it in the region of £11,750 and I don't appear to be getting much interest as it is...... Does give me an excuse to keep it though!!

Will give it a think tonight, but if MPSS are supposed to be much better, it may be worth just replacing all 4, as you said.

Anybody have a comparison/experience with the differences between the 2 tyres?

Cheers

I've had bridgestones and they were shocking compared to Goodyear F1s. People say the MPSS are better still.

I think if someone came to view the car with odd tyres on, it wouldn't look too good. Put a good set of tyres on and it looks like you really look after the car.

When you say shocking, is that in terms of grip or just how hard the ride is with them? Or even both!!

That's very true, maybe having MPSS on all round will make it a little more appealing... Or maybe I'm talking myself into getting a set!!

Need to still have a think before I drop £700 on tyres, when there is still a good amount of tread; with the exception of the fooked one.

Cheers

Grip level was shocking.

You could always try and sell the tombstones on eBay or here for track use.
