Norwich Union

Just paid my renewal - over 40, 5 yrs NCD - £520 excess, full RAC (why?) green card and optional track day

£1692

Was offered Chaucer for £1300 but not as good cover

Tried the "I can buy it for cheaper" route but NU said pay it or go elsewhere

Hmm I deal with both Chaucer and NU on a day to day basis and although NU are branded I would have took the chaucer 1 (unless the trackday was important as chaucer don't do it)as NU's payouts are abysmal!

The full RAC cover is a payable option with NU, so if you don't want it tell them to take it off. If it was free check the small print as it probably says full European Cover, which is only when you are outside the UK (I know it's as much use a chocolate fire guard but thats wha they do).
