Tried to upload pics to make this easy, but its not working!!.

Anyways, today I started the car and heard a rattling sound. Very concerned so lifted the bonnet and had a poke around. Came across a loose engine cover (one of two thats sits either side of the engine and borders on the two airtakes going into the turbo) held on by two plastic twist screws. One of the plastic screws was not screwed in, so decided to unscrew the other (as had difficulties in trying to screw the loose one in), lo and behold the casing comes off and the round plastic clip that goes around around the thing on the engine about a couple of inches in diameter has been replaced with a coat hanger....yes a [email]bl@@dy[/email] coat hanger. No wonder the thing was rattling away.

The car just had its 40k service to include a change of spark plugs which would have meant this casing needed to come off, leads me to believe the dealer did it......now as this was a metal coat hanger, could this have potentially caused a problem as this was very close to some engine thingys,ie, shorting the electrics etc.

What do i do...confront the dealer and demand the casing gets replaced and then demand further compensation for any potential damage this could have caused, or do i simply just take it on the chin and pay for a new casing out of me own pocket.

Your thoughts please.

I word of note, put the hanger back before you go in, main reason being that if you take it out theres no evidence that its been in there!

Just take it in and tell them that you can see it from the side after a inspection at home, but you didnt want to mess about with it due to the warranty being void! lol [img]images/graemlins/jump.gif[/img] give them abit of there own medicine!

Would put the casing back on the engine as you suggest, however, when I did, the hanger must have been in contact with part of the engine or something as when I started the car it sparked and the engine would not turn over....so i am very apprehensive about putting back on the car just in case I short something.

The coat hanger is wrapped around part of the engine casing and twisted around a few times, so it is still intact on the casing, but the casing is in me back seat at the moment..

Do you think they could blame me for it or should I risk putting the casing back with the hanger?

I dont know if they would go as far as saying that you did it but they may say that they didnt! best thing todo is ring them up first and explain, they will then book your car in to be checked over (FOC) and come up with a solution.......... but at the end of the day is going to cost them if they are held liable, make sure you get a freeby! which dealer did this? was it a franchised Audi dealer?

if so drop an email to kevin.rose@audi.co.uk (mr audi uk to you) he is very pro active in this regard and will come down on the delaer like a tonne (we're metric now) of bricks. [img]images/graemlins/rocketwhore.gif[/img]

Just uploaded the pics of how the engine casing was held together....have a lookin the gallery and you'll see what I mean.

Went back to the dealer today and showed the service manager the offending item. He was quite amazed that even if the mechanic did not break it, he did not advise the manager of this problem, so it leads one to believe the mechanic may be the guilty party.

He is going to replace it and it is on order for tomorrow. I have taken the regional managers name and number and will call him tomorrow and see what he has to say.

The problem I have now is what else did they screw up and did they really complete the 40k service as it should have been done.
