Cheap commuter?

I need to get myself a cheap little commuter to stop putting the miles on the RS and reduce my fuel bill in the new year. Any good suggestions for a smart, presentable, reliable commuter with good mpg? Thinking A2, Ibiza, Smart, 308 so far.

Thanks, sort of

New criteria then, with four wheels and a roof

And not totally embarrassing to be seen in

Dont know your budget Andy but styling wise i would rather have a 2009 ford fiesta as a runabout.

Abarth 500. They sound awesome for such a small engine. And as its a turbo it's easy to tune!

could normally get 600 miles out of my ST, great car for what you can pick them up for now. Got rid of mine with 155k on the clock. Very solid cars

Hear what you're saying but I'm a little locked into the finance to out it just yet. I would hope just to reduce the usage on the normal commute into the office but still use it for the longer journeys and probably at least one day a week for fun. I'm looking to not only reduce my monthly fuel bill but also keep the miles from staking up to fast on the RS. I've just gone past 50K and with a house move on the cards my daily commute will be 50 miles as opposed to 12 so I'm looking to stop huge miles being put on the car and killing the value very quickly.
Thinking I only want to spend a couple of grand on a run around but equally not buy a rust bucket that's going to let me down every day. Not worried about high mileage a solid car will take this in its stride now days, Mondeo ST being a case in point from the comments. Tbh, I hadn't even thought about the Mondeo as I assumed a larger car wouldn't be that economic but clearly this one is worth looking at, ta.
Cheers for the suggestions and I'll do a bit more research

I honestly wouldn't bother and just enjoy the RS
It's going to shed money in depreciation doing nothing sat in your garage so why not just drive it

Fair point tbh. I'm just speculating at the moment as a lot of things can go wrong between now and moving to the new place, therefore this might turn out to be completely pointless!
This has all come about as we are taking on a huge mortgage and committing ourselves back into long term debt. Once I explained to the misses just how much the RS was actually costing, that was a comfortable conversation I can tell you

To be honest she was fine about it as she doesn't give me a hard time about things like this. I thought I could do something to show willing and reduce the outgoings a little. I might just think bugger it, I'll enjoy it whilst I've got it but for now I'm just doing a little man maths to see if its worth earning some brownie points and be able to up my mortgage overpayments.

A3 8L 1.9 TDI any horsepower you want, they're bomb proof and bundles to the gallon. Probably get an old one for under a grand.
