Clunking on full lock at low speed.
Clunking on full lock at low speed.
Hi folks.
As the title suggests, im wondering what would cause a clukking noise from the outside front wheel when turning in full lpck at low speed (<10mph).
Any ideas?
Cheers,
Mark.

Re: Clunking on full lock at low speed.
All permanent four wheel drive quattros with three differentials share this trait. All four tyres are trying to scribe a different radius when you turn on full lock. The castor on the front steering lifts the tyres onto their edges when on full lock, so it will usually be one of the front tyres that judders on the tarmac

Yea. If you Google Ackermann Effect you'll be enlightened.

That's a relief!
Makes perfect sense, and also mayches the wear pattern on my front tyres!
@jamiej thanks for that, i am familiar with the principle, but was concerned as i never experienced this issue on my jag or subaru. Although if i remember rightly those 4wd systems are different to the asymmetrical torsen utilised on my audi.
Panic mostly over but i might get it checked all the same, if only due to some of the posts about loose bilts on steering racks etc.
Thanks all.

Did occur to me, in between worrying about front diff, cv joints, etc etc. Thanks gor the reply.
Am going to have it checked anyway just for my peace of mind!

Re: Clunking on full lock at low speed.
Turned out just replacing the front tyres has completely stopped the noise from happening.
