B8 S4 o/s door mirror - ouch

Post by Geoff A » Sat Oct 29, 2016 7:44 am

So I had a lucky escape yesterday afternoon, after some kamikaze scrote in a rag top beemer made a risky overtake and was charging head on towards me as he hurried to pass a line of traffic between bampton and lew (A4095) in Oxfordshire. Despite me getting on the brakes and doing what I could, he managed to whack my driver's door mirror as he dived in. How he didn't take me off the road I don't know - it wasn't my time. He hit my mirror so hard it split the ally casing, and the mirror glass explosion has caused a bit of collateral damage too.
Needless to say, he didn't stop and my dash cam malfunctioned so I didn't get it either, so I'm doubly pissed off.

Jeez, these mirrors are pricey from my local super stealer. £345.50 for the glass element ffs, £198.59 for the mechanism and £323.28 for the ally housing - though I think I can get away without needing the last two, as I'll make a full check of parts and damage today. But nigh on a bag of sand for a complete mirror is really taking the p*$$. The indicator element is a measly £32.41. Think I'll buy two of those.

Other than a trawl of evilbay and recyclers, does anyone know if the mirror glass is common to any other models that may make it less pricey, as I fear I may be paying S/RS tax linked to my B8 S4? Any pointers greatly appreciated. If I can limit the damage to glass and an indicator, I'm getting off lightly.

The ali housing? The mirror casing is silver painted plastic, surely?

Id get down a breakers and buy a same-colour (or silver or black) complete drivers mirror as a temporary fix. And the worry about the casing being the wrong colour later. You can change the outer casing without taking the entire door to pieces. I'm certain A4 and S4 mirrors are the same bar the outer casing colour/finish

PS. Glad you are okay all things considered. Great bit of road that, I recall having fun in my old S4 around the couple of 'yumps' in the road around Lew
