This is my understanding, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

The Porsche 911 is rear engined and therefore achieves fairly even front-rear brake distribution, as do mid engined cars. This is why they have similar sized brakes front and rear. Basically they stop much better than front engined cars.

Front engined cars put 80-90 % of their weight on the front wheels when braking, hence the difference in disc sizes.

Putting larger rear brakes on (in relation to the fronts) may make matters worse as they will either upset the brake balance - too much rear bias makes the car unstable when braking - or they will not reach a reasonable working temperature and be ineffective.
