Newbie to RS6plus ownership

Post by yorkrs6+ » Thu Dec 08, 2011 11:14 pm

Just bought my first RS6...went for the plus model as it ticked all the right boxes.

I bought the car knowing it needed some minor TLC, but basically had a sound history and all the major complaints seemed to have been replaced - DRC, AutoBox, recent cam belt change inc tensioners, oil service, brakes/pads and tyres, 12mths mot. Wheels were refurbed 12mths ago. When checking the car over I noted the rocker cover gaskets seemed to be weaping a little - I had an M5 which did the same thing, and my local specialist did this - the bill was reasonable.
I took it to my specialist today because the Emissions Control lamp came on, and I was pretty sure I could smell oil in the cabin when applying a heavy right foot. The car also isn't as quick as I was hoping, but its difficult to bench mark as I have a 911 997 turbo as my toy car - and this is very very quick. Also if someone took my own car for a test drive and spanked its arse massively I'd be very annoyed - so its not the kind of thing you can really do on a test drive. Most things merely feel quick in comparison to my 911. I used to have e39 M5 (v8 model) as my family car - which was my first taster of a super saloon - over the years it was heavily modified - in the end - on a good day - it felt almost as quick as my 911 T. I was kind of hoping the Rs6 + with its 480BHP would be comparable to my former M5 - thus avoiding all the modifications and expense - instead I see some major costs on the horizon. Stripping some weight being one of them... There's at least half an adult condensed into the boot disguised as a battery..
Anyway enough of the waffle.. having looked in great detail on the ramps with my local specialist - we found some oil leaks.
The rocker cover I was aware of, however my specialist tells me the drivers side turbo seals have gone which is leaking into the intercoolers (which were saturated).
Given the miles and amount of work to get at them… I might as well replace both turbos … this is will be a major expense … has any one had this done? if so can somone suggest a bench mark cost for the turbos and labour?

Are there any uprated or bigger turbo’s to consider or a tuning company to do these and perhaps remap etc as a job lot cost - if so any thoughts on cost and who?
Seams daft to do this task and expense if there’s some comparable alternatives offering better performance and durability? Thoughts welcomed
I also found a light leak coming from within the flywheel to gearbox housing – any thought on what this might be. My specialist thinks its a seal but won't know which one until he takes out the gearbox. I also read that its good to replace the autobox oil regualarly - what oil is recommended amongst the owners... given their problems...
I also found that both front and rear wheels on the drivers side – have an excessive number of weights on the inner wall – suggesting that they might be bent – south yorkshire roads for you....
Drivers Car mats is also worn, along with steering wheel leather too – Audi are helping me source replacement individual pack items.
Not a great start to ownership, but I bought it for a price that was kind of reflective that there was some other reason the owner was wanting to part with it.
The rest of the car is v good. Any help welcomed...

Unit 20 or MRC Tuning is where you want to go. Get it decatted, a milltek and remap and a member here made about 540 BHP, mooch with that spec did a GPS 204 mph and 0-60 in 3.6 seconds. You know it makes sense. In an RS 6 you can't just bolt on bigger turbos, lots of engine parts need to be changed too, Amanda's Unit 20 build is running 950 NM of torque and MRC have built a 750 BHP manual one, just depends how much you want to spend.

thanks for the recommendation - I will contact Unit 20 as they are closest.
950Nm - now your talking how much work though - would like to know what was in the shopping basket for this make over?
remap yes, decat yes... miltek - not so sure... was never a big fan of these on the M5s. I went with a custom built Hayward and Scott inc racing cats - had all the development work done by a pal who was going under the name of black flag. There was a group of who went to the Isle or man to have our remaping work done
not only was H&S system incredibly light weight in comparison to the M5s 180KG unit, but it had a very deep sound track. If you have bass on your speakers check out the old link - can't beleive its still on YouTube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnp2Spph6yE.

I will more than likely do the H&S setup again as stripping the wieght off the M5 made an massive difference too, other than battery. exhaust and DRC not sure what else.
On the M5 - the front seats weighed around 100KG, so I imported so black nappa leight weight electric recaros from the US which weighed 20KG each - they were much more snug too. Nightmare to wire in though.

Welcome mate to the select and exclusive Plus club. Estimated only around 70 left in the UK apparently....Im trying to confirm that exactly. Any way sounds like loads of work by the sound of it to be done which I hope was reflected in the price and gives you a bit to play with. :) Im interested where you found your Plus in the first instance ( is it a forum car?) as when I was looking I think I only found 3 for sale in the whole UK.

The best specialists have been mentioned already, add Rob Chorley add Camberley Audi (who inspected, serviced and worked on mine recently) but might be a long way for you and there arnt that many more recommended by the boys and girls on here.

Oh by the way your car so doesnt exist until we see proof of its existance!!

Good luck with the face lift.

That's the one... got it for a few hundred less given whats needed. On the whole the car is good....it's in good hands now.
I had a great chat with Martin @ Unit 20 and it became very clear this was the place to have the work done. I've given him a shopping list of stuff to do, for convenience I'll be getting a race cat Mitek system at the same time, engine remap and gearbox remap.

as it has the individual interior /exclusive pack - the replacement stearing wheel will cost almost £1k - they have to hand stitch a new one. howver they can't do the mats - I don't quite understand this - anyone know who can do this? Audi can supply plain black mats but without the tan edging - I will somehow need to get this done.

Thanks for the great referral

Try my car mats on eBay as they used to be a forum sponser on srs but I cannot find a valid link :(
The mats were good quality and fitted well coming complete with the RS logo but audi uk put a stop to that!

I have to say I like the ride, but it feels a bit overweight when throwing it around.

Is the KW coilover system (variant 3 - I think?) any better. Ie better corning, but almost equal to standard ride.
I have previously used KW variant 3 on my m5. These were much lighter than OEM, and after a lot tweaking - was almost as smooth as standard ride, but firmer on bends.
My only criticism was that the system seemed to need adjustment now and then.
Also how heavy is the DRC system - is there any significant weight saving to be made with KW coilovers.
