Registering in wife / partner's name

Post by Dom81 » Wed Mar 21, 2007 12:05 pm

I'll be running a company S4 till the year end, and taking delivery of a new RS4 (bought privately) next month

To get a second Parking Permit I'll need to register the new car in my partner's name

This doesn't seem to be an issue from an insurance point of view (especially since we'll both be drivers) but are there any other pitfalls I need to consider?

Also, if I transfer ownership to me once the S4 goes back, would I be regarded as a second owner or is it fairly clear that the car has stayed within the same household?

Sorry for stupid questions, but I've had 15 years of company cars...

I can help with regard to transferring ownership, you will be another registered owner - the DVLA specifically says you can not 'joint' register a car.

Funny thing is, the form shows as registered keepers, not owners.

I have the same issue with my Parking Permits, and had thought it would have been a problem initially - possibly having to re-register the other car in my wife's name.

It depends on the policy of the local authority, but for mine (Wandsworth) they were happy enough with the insurance in my wife's name, and a covering letter stating she is the main user of the car.

Besides there's always a risk registering in your partners name - this guy won't do it again:

Thanks all for your thoughts - seems like there's a difference between owner, keeper and driver to contend with!

I'm Kensington & Chelsea, and on the surface they seem insistent on one car per person but I'll pursue

Other issue is that I want to be the main user (insurance wise) as I've no private history and need to start at some point - so I'll end up with a car in my partner's name but with me as the main driver

Hopefully she won't sell it for 50p...

Hopefully they apply the same common sense as Wandsworth, who also insist on one car per person - after all the registered keeper may not be the main user, as in our household, and adding another keeper seems pointless just for a permit.

It will add another owner! Also, becareful when filing out the logbook if you change address, as I added another owner to my motorbike in error by filling out the wrong bit! Eventually got it sorted, but for some time I had the previous owner and current as the same person at different addresses :boots:

The log book shows the previous owner while you have it, but another owner down the line will not beable to see the peoples names and therefore in his/her eyes, the car has had another owner!
