New Purchase Gearbox Questions...

Post by MrGeneric » Fri Oct 12, 2012 3:15 pm

Hi All,

Hope everyone is well...

Ok a little situation here... Have seen a car which im looking to purchase. Its a C5 RS6 with 65k on the clock. Its had a new gearbox fitted by Audi in March 2012 at the costs of £7000; i asked for the guy to clarify whether the TC had also been replaced but audi confirmed today that the damage was on the internals of the actual gearbox and the TC was fine...

Tell me if im wrong but shouldnt they also have change the TC? Isnt that the most easiest part to FAIL?

Opinions plz

Nothing Audi does surprises me.

It makes sense to change the TC at the same time as the box, but then it makes sense to change the thermostat and water pump at the same time as the cam belt, but they don't.

Seeing that its now had a new box im just thinknig the TC will go next taking the gearbox with it...

Am i being paranoid or could that well be the case?

Well, it's not ideal. I think the worst you are risking is that the TC fails and you have to pay for the labour to change it. If it lunches itself then it might send a bit of debris into the box, but I am now fairly convinced that the box is quite capable of lunching itself without the help from the TC.

If the TC goes, it's gonna cost you a couple of grand. Still, if you bought a car that hadn't just had the gearbox changed then that could still happen. And your gearbox is guaranteed for 18 months...

Audi changed the gearbox in mine before I bought it under warranty yet they didn't change the tc. It is very poor practice in my opinion, every gearbox I work on has a new tc fitted.

The stupid penny-pinchingness of it is enough to make your blood boil.

Its true very poor practice! It only costs a few hundred quid...
Compared to the labour of having to do it after plus the damage it may cause to the box if it fcuks up again...

A new torque converter is not on the invoice from Audi. I wouldn't trust main dealers

i have also inquired Audi for a new gearbox and they told me it comes complete with the TC and central differential, so my guess is that is what your car has now, check the invoice and get the part number for the gearbox! I am pretty sure you have a new TC as well, it is not mentioned as a different part because it is included in the gearbox!

Perhaps mine did have a new verter then. Very strange that the op has been told that the car didn't have a new verter though
