C5 RS6 Vagcom - have I lost the plot?

Post by Scotland » Wed May 02, 2012 2:36 pm

OK, I've done loads of searches on here for previous posts but I still don't get Vagcom.

So all I need to do is buy this:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/220518250615? ... 1423.l2649
download some shareware software and I have Vagcom? For £8?!

Am I missing something?

If so, then all I do is buy this instead?:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/120902686393? ... 1423.l2649
or
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/170828541013? ... 1423.l2649

Sorry, go easy on me - I'm a newbie remember!

Yep, the top link (blue cable) is what you want - this will let you run the VCDS lite software available at the link below. Your bottom 2 links for hardware scanners are not what you want ;)

http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/vag-functions.html

You can register VCDS lite for $99 but probably for a quick scan as you don't own the car yet, you might get away with just the completely free version

I'd avoid any cables over 10 quid that claim to work with full VCDS... if they are not direct from ross-tech or gendan (their uk distributor) they will be chinese clones. Ross tech are a great company and spending the cash on a legit ross-tech cable to support them is well worth it. As is buying a cheap as chips cable and registering VCDS lite shareware

Yes the blue cable is what you want plug that into a laptop install the driver from the cd that comes with the cable

Next goto ross tech website and just download VCDS-Lite this will enable you to scan the car for fault codes once installed

http://www.ross-tech.com/vcds/download/

any problems at all give me a shout :)

you do not want anything to do with those last two links you posted up ignore all that

Great stuff. I've ordered the top one so I'll let you know how I get on. I'll test it on the wife's golf tdi 1st!

Just ordered one myself - thanks. I'll give it a whirl on the neighbours A6 :)

Is the OBD port in the usual place by the fuse boxes under the steering wheel?

Thanks for this post...I ordered that exact lead and downloaded the free software, just cleared my codes and took it for a run and happy to say no faults present when I read it again when I got back home. :)
