Gearbox weirdness

Post by Danrowland » Thu Jan 12, 2012 8:28 pm

Hi all- I hope you can help me with this one.

I've done some searching but can't find an answer.

On my way home from work today the TC started being weird. When setting off from standstill when having been in neutral the TC / gearbox just seems to let go for a couple of seconds. It doesn't slip; it just disengages then engages again suddenly. This only happens in 1st.

If I stop but leave it in tiptro so it changes to 1st and set off again it is fine.

The problem only manifests if I've just shifted from neutral to tiptro and set off in 1st. I tried shifting from neutral to D and everything seemed fine but I set off gently so it may have squelched immediately into 2nd.

There is no slip at all in any gears as far as I can tell; just the sudden disengagement when in 1 st when having just shifted from neutral.

I don't know if anyone has any ideas but I'd really appreciate some guidance!

Thank you all.

Time for a gearbox scan with Vagcom. That should give you your first clue to the problem. Although I think Amanda has TC that kicking and banging that doesn't throw any codes.

Hard to say what the problem could be without knowing what codes are being registered.

Thank you maximo. I suppose it will have to be a trip to Audi Shop as I don't have Vagcom. I don't suppose anyone can recommend anybody in the York / Leeds / Harrogate area?

Check your brakelight switch. It would cause the TC to unlock if it thought you were pressing the brake pedal.

No problem

You should really think about investing in a Vagcom. After avoiding a couple of trips to the dealer it will have paid for itself. And this kind of problem is much easier to diagnose with a Vagcom. Audi would never take the time to properly diagnose an issue like this (unless their asses were on the line) because it involves have 2 techs in the car and a mobile diagnostics and, more importantly, having a clue what you are doing.

Oh I forgot to mention: this happened immediately after taking the car for a service.

Did they do a G/B service?

No it was just a normal long life service with the usual 'every 20k / 40k' stuff done: oil and filters etc. there was no mention of going anywhere near the gb. I have no reason to think they have broken it apart from the coincidental timings.

You didn't really mean longlife, did you?

I don't actually know what a longlife service is. I assume it's the flexible servicing periods but I know no more than that (is it different oil?). In the service book they have checked:

Longlife service
Every 40k miles
Every 2 years
Every 20k miles

And ticked that the service is due when indicated on the dash.

Have I / they done something wrong?

Thanks.

Service every 10k miles on the RS6 or 1 year, whichever sooner. Longlife regime (every 20k miles) strictly forbidden. Longlife products (plugs) OK.

Oh ok thanks!

I have only had the car for 8 months and have done about 10k in it and it was serviced just before I bought it.

This is what the service book says for this service:

LongLife: yes
Oil change: no
Inspection: no

Additional regular servicing
Every 40k miles: yes
Every 60k miles: no

Additional work
Note to say that air, fuel, oil filters replaced
Every 2 years: yes
Every 20k miles: yes
Every 40k miles: yes
Every 60k miles: no
Every 80k miles: no
Every 115k miles: no

Car has done 81k miles but had the cam belt (+ribbed belt) and tensioners etc and spark plugs done at last service just before I bought it. And I had the gearbox oil changed about 5k ago.

Have I caused a problem? Should a do something to resolve what I've done or am I ok if I continue to service every 10k miles and tell them not to do longlife services. Should Audi have known this?

Sorry for all the questions and I do appreciate it (also appreciate my ignorance) but do you think this could have any bearing on the gearbox problem?

Cheers.

Audi should have known this.

As long as the car is serviced (oil and filter, etc) every 10k miles and the plugs, air filter and fuel filter changed every 20k miles then you should be OK.

AT 60k miles you should have had the radiator cleaned.

What oil did they put in?

Your gearbox problem sounds like it might be the infamous F125 switch. They might have knocked it messing around under your car.
