Sat-Nav (RNS-E) giving up?

Firstly, Happy belated New Year to you all.
Decided to use the Sat-Nav over the festive period, first time in ages, only to find that it wasn't playing ball.
Kept displaying disc 'unreadable' I've cleaned the lens, but still happening. Took it into my local stealer, who very kindly put in a new disc to try to see if that worked - still no joy. Their response was - "You're gonna need a new unit" - priced at ££££'s. I can't believe that it's given up the ghost. The radio, TV & CDs all work ok, does this sound familiar to anyone

I've read on here stories of the laser giving up if it's used with, ahem, 'backup DVD's' of Audi maps, the reason i mention it is I've never heard of it happening on any other DVD drive so it may be a co-incidence and that there's a weakness / common fault with the units...

Had the same problem last year, hazzydaze repaired it by changing the drive, took about 1.5hours and about £240 + vat (from memory).
The explanation is that the dvd drive is always on when the unit is on, regardless of whether you use the nav or not so it explains why it gives up the ghost after several years. I cannot see how the type of DVD being used would make a difference.

DVD-R are more prone to write errors than production DVDs so the head has to read the same bit of the disc many times to get enough info for the error correction algorithms to work. Makes the mechanism work harder and fail sooner.

My thoughts are that it's a poor design that causes it. I stripped mine down and cleaned the laser lens. Every time I cleaned the disc, it was covered in dust.

Not sure if this is related to your issue but my Nav after being stuck in the same location for months has now come back to life !

Just when I was about to replace it with a puck etc .....Its not showing any sats but is working and even giving me route guidance this morning ont he way home!!! I have however some of the discs showing as unreadable in the player but those also vary every day..... I reckon I've got a poltergeist!!

Suggestions chaps?

Throw the TV out the window and don't let Heather O'Rourke catch the flu...
