Although not a common fault on the 6 check coolant level and areas around heater outlets by feet just in case the matrix is leaking slightly. Also check the carpets aren't damp especially the passenger side.

Get one of those antibacterial sprays that you leave in the car to fumigate it for a couple of minutes.

Or a professional air con specialist can apply the bactericide directly where it'll do the most good for a minimum cost.

Good call yet again , but check the filter first cause if that's old and damp it won't help at all

Did you notice if the 'ECON' button was light up? If the owner tended to leave it on all the time (apart from few hot days we have), then that could account for it. If not then, as has been stated, definately worth investgating the root cause further.
I usually leave the aircon off in my cars, when not needed, but always make a point of running it for at least 20mins a month to keep everything lubed up :P
Another quick fix (if there's nothing physically wrong, and one that you could potentially try before buying), is to turn the aircon on, but set the temperature to max for a good few minutes - will often burn off the majority of any bacteria that has built up!
