Hi people had a knocking coming from the front of the car for a while now and I've checked all the suspension over and over again but when I had the bonnet up the other day just doing the normal oil and water check my friend jumped in the drivers seat as you do and started moving the steering wheel this is when I heard a noise coming from just under the brake servo after more inspection this is the knocking noise I'm hearing I have been told by someone that this is a common fault on the a6 and a4 that the rack bolts can come loose just wanted to know if anyone else had come across this and if the bolts are easy to get to do I need a ramp or can I jack it up put it on axle stands and get to the bolts that way any info would be very helpfull the noise is driving me crazy

Yeah, this is really common. Most people go through a couple of pairs of undies before they find out it's an easy fix. There are 3 or 4 bolts that need tightening up. You don't need a ramp, but *everything* is easier with a ramp.
The rack is bolted from above and below, so you'll need to move some of the gubbins out of the way like the expansion tank, etc.

I can't comment on the rs6 bolts but the rs4 are something like 40nm + 90 degrees.
they are stretchy bolts so best to renew rather than just tighten as they will come undone again.

i had same knock on turning wheel to the left while coming to a stop. Turned out to be steering rack bolts not fully torqued up by dealer after transmission install. Torqued up rack bolts correctly-knocking gone!

The more I read posts on this forum, the more I wish I hadn't
Steering rack coming loose!
Another thing to keep my fingers crossed about!
