Disaster!

Drove down to Pembrokeshire this mornig - effortless run, and car running like a dream.

Been torrential rain down here since dawn (more than 3" today!), and we had a scare late afternoon when the lane outside our place turned into a raging torrent threatening to flood us. Four of us with pick axes and shovels managed to divert the flow as the water got within 10mm of the threshold.

Decided to go for some fish and chips....

narrow lane, sharp corner, water across road - drove in at about 20MPH (as I had throgh a dozen patches already) - on;ly this was 18" deep...

Bow wave suddenly over the bonnet - and an engine full of water. Took the top off the airbox, and it was full of water...

Car will go by AA Relay to MRC tomorrow but I reckon I'm looking at a new engine

Need sympathy!! (and a big wallet!)

No warranty - I have relied on a slush fund for years.

Not sure about insurance - will have to ring the broker tomorrow as I am away and don't have the policy with me....

Does fully comp usually cover damage due to floods?

Not so sure...It will be salvageable these boys created Panzer's in the late 40's that could cross rivers...It will need draining and no doubt some electrics...but the block and associated should be okay

The same thing happened to a friend of mine a couple of years ago.Insurance co wrote off his car and he bought it back and fitted a new engine.You should be able to make a claim I would think.

Block may be OK - but I'll be very surprised if there aren't bent valves and/or con rod - and engine doesn't pump out water as effectively as it does exhaust gas.....

Tried the starter motor - just tries to turn but engine is solid............

Think you will be okay...there will be damage but hopefully not terminal...as before should be salvageable...fingers crossed

I would be surprised if you weren't covered.

Ive had a 3 customers who made claims on insurance for engine damage and all were successful.

^^^ agree with Heardy on the insurance, as for engine damage i would think bent conrods at worst but i have seen plenty of water flooded petrol engines surviving this with no major damage, diesels no chance.
