Intercooler repair

Post by Mr V10 » Sat Oct 22, 2011 12:51 pm

As you guys know the car is going to Grizz soon but whilst the car is here I was thinking of pulling the intercoolers off and dropping them at MRC who are local for a refurb, they've quoted me £144 to refurbish them if I take them off and put them on again myself. Is it going to be a lot more difficult to take them off on a Plus? Benefits would be save £££ and it gives me something to do.

Hi Amar, I did a DIY a while back on intercooler refurbishment. If you are confident enough and able to remove them from the car then you are definitely more than capable of fixing them yourself. I doubt there is much difference in removing the coolers from a plus to a normal RS6, just need to pay attention to the extra radiators mounted at the back of the coolers. Have a look at my DIY and make your own mind up! It's inthe FAQ sticky, and here:

It's definitely more of a pain on the plus than the 6's without the hot weather packs.

Thanks guys, I've read through both threads and they were what gave me the confidence to go ahead. Taking them in and out looks easy enough and I've had the front bumper off my S8 a fair few times in the past, the last time was to change the parking sensor and the first to sort the headlight washers. I think I'll take them out tomorrow then drive them upto MRC for a refurb as I don't trust myself to do that part. They said they will do both sides, pressure test them etc all for £144. Grizz says £250 whilst he does the Cambelt and other work and fuel to MRC will cost £3 in my BMW so I'm £103 quids in, which I can use on my vibrating pedal repair, result.

Do you remember what they charged for removal and fitment too, any noticeable improvement in performance?

Absolutely, if you want to do that it works well for me. Did you do your own/pressure test them all etc? Sounds like a plan. I didn't take them out today (too lazy) but could do this Saturday. :thumb:

Been intouch with the guy who i borrowed the pressure tester and sadly he no longer has it cause he has changed trades. I have done 2 pairs of coolers now whith no leakage on either so it's upto you if you are happy with me doing them. I can spray them up no problem if you supply the paint. I sparyed the ones syd brought off me silver and they looked really good.

Amar - not sure if this helps from a cost perspective Audi Camberley just changed a cooler and and pipes (there was a leak and pipe had welded itself on) the other day on mine and the bill should have been £1700. We didnt pay that but it gives you an idea of the labour side of things perhaps.

Sounds good to me Chunky, have you got other means to pressure test them now then?
MEV - it is a front end off job, headlights and front bumper. I reckon it will be easy enough, I've got the Elsa instructions now. Grizz will be taking it all apart again to do the cambelt the week after so he can double check everything went back as it should've.

Are you talking about the oil cooler?
