But what if you brick it? I thought only tuners and Audi had enough experience to flash ECUs. Why don't you just get the issue coded out?
BTW - what is the 16985 error?
No matter where you go, there you are.

Scan your car with VCDS and it will tell you the part number of the ecu. You shuld be able to code it yourself if you have a genune VCDS.
I recommend you do a full scan of your car and save it somewhere as this will give you the coding for all the modules on the car if you have problems in the future.

There's not many spares around. And its a little complicated anyway...at this point I'd suggest just letting a stealer solve it. Otherwise you could just get into trouble and pay more in the end than just letting them solve it..

Nobody said the RS6 experience was cheap :( Be glad its not a box or turbos gone south lol

I think this guy could get you a used ECU http://cgi.ebay.de/Audi-RS6-PLUS-4B-Get ... 23102bed80
I sent him a msg once but he wanted 2.5K for a used plus autobox

yes they are hard to find...ive send a message to the link you mentioned jcviggen. ive seen he has a VW R32 ecu for 400 euros, so the rs6 one will be a bit more expensive maybe. but if i find one, is it just plug and play or should i go to Audi to install it?

It will need to be coded to the car to work, you can do that with VCDS. Though I havent done it myself there is probably a how-to somewhere. I have also heard the ECU is not so easy to get out of the car (except if yours has been hardware chipped in the past then it should be easier to get out)

Yes ive heard that, i called a local Audi stealer who confirmed that. Although they couldnt read out my ecu, they only could read the error with vagcom, so they cant do more then myself...thats weird. a local tuner/radiospecialist/rims/etc. can read my ecu and adviced me to chip it so it overwrites the old chip (if chipped), if the ecu isnt already dead/dying.
The charge me 600 euros to chip it. but what makes a good chip, what makes it different then other chiptuners? ive heard good reviews about viper tuning, but dont know if they can sent me the chipsoftware and get it installed by a local tuner. or maybe the local tuner can get it direct from them...
And audi said i could drive with the errorlight on, while the local tuner said dont drive too long with it, maybe other parts are also suffering from it... :audibash:

Dont pay anything to chip the old dying one. Unless they offer to chip the new one you will 95% chance need for free and code it to the car while they are at it.

If the problem was the software it would have been there a year ago. That is only comes up now must mean a hardware failure somewhere.

Perhaps there is someone on this forum who are willing to share their chiptuning software with fellow RS6 users. Maybe someone their RS6 has sold and the software CD is still available ...

You can extract your ECU's working file with this tool http://www.nefariousmotorsports.com/for ... itle,.html

You can use it for flashing as well but unless you get a file that is 100 percent sure correct I would not try it. After all, whatever BIN file you extract will be "corrupt" if that is indeed the problem. You could extract it and email it to a tuner who may be able to check if the mapping has been altered, that would answer that at least.

Actually an easier way would be to clear the code and drive it right away so before the DTC comes back. Use VCDS to log requested/actual boost levels. If the ECU requests around 0.6-0.7 bar then its stock (needs some simple math, I believe the ECU uses mbar and the atmospheric pressure is included IIRC)
