Battery relocation on rs6

Hi guys,

Has anyone done this?

The idea of not having a proper spare wheel is quite scary to me.

Now, in my RS6 the battery is in the spare wheel well (i'm assuming it's the same on all), has anyone relocated it so you can actually keep a spare wheel?

If so, where did you put it and do you have any pics/details?

Pretty much the opposite of what people usually do when "relocating" :mrgreen:

Seriously though, where would you put it? No room in the engine bay, if you noticed it is a sizeable sucker. You can get some slightly smaller dry batteries but unless you are willing to have it in the boot somewhere in sight and taking up space i think it's difficult.

True mate,

I'd even be tempted to do move it into the boot. Will stick out like a sore thumb but a nice battery cover will make it look a bit smarter.

No spare wheel is madness IMO

Are you going to use a skinnyassed replacement wheel? The OEM wheel won't fit if IIRC. Plus you'd need to get the same rolling diameter or risk shagging the quattro.
...and like JC said, it is a very big battery. For some reason this thread reminds me of my mum's vibrator

I was thinking any genuine 18/19'' wheel - whatever is small enough to fit.

Just as a temporary measure really... Say your tyre was to actually rip, that foam thing is useless.

Agreed but it's very rare. Start a poll and see how many people have experienced a tyre rip on their RS6. It would be interesting.
For me the extra weight, less space and fuel costs hardly seems worth it if you only use it once in x years. I've got Audi roadside assist but I still like sex without a condom, it feels more special, especially if she's still awake.

I agree 100% fella.

However, the last thing i want is to be on a motorway, middle of nowhere, with family and a blow out or puncture that won't hold with the foam stuff.

Then waiting on a hard shoulder for recovery.

Sods law it will happen now lol.

I recently had a ripped tyre (too much negative camber).

The jack was broken so couldn't change the wheel. Luckily i was only a few miles from home, so i called my brother to bring a jack down.

It can happen, but as you say it is rare.

I hear that. So you're more of a two condom and chilli sauce kinda guy., nuttin' wrong with that As I said, be careful to get the rolling diameter correct or risk damage to the quattro system.

Just to clarify, if im running 19's, the spare will need to be a 19 to ensure the quattro system doesn't get damaged.

Am i right in saying the width doesn't matter. Eg 3x 9.5j and one 8.5j?

Bear in mind the spare is obviously just a temporary measure so won't be run long term.

The tyre profile is important. If you were tricky I guess you could get an 18 with a higher profile to match the tyres you have on your OEMs. Get it? I'm not sure how many miles the quattro can take with different rolling diameters across the axle but I could say that I wouldn't want to find out...

Mmmmm . . . . . . .

For what it is worth i have been here and you are absolutely right. After splitting a front tyre (and bending the rim) on a mammoth size pothole, i found myself and the family in exactly this scenario. Stranded on the road side, juuuuuust outside of mobile coverage is insanely frustrating. Not to say anything about all the offers of help that turn to obvious queer looks and comments of stupidity, "WTF ? ? ? you dont carry a spare ! ! ! ! Are you really so stupid . . . . . "

Anyway, finally got hold of a friend of mine who has a c6 S Line to come over 200km round trip with his spare. Found that if we brought a rear wheel forward then an OEM 17" spare will fit over rear calipers. So, any spare must at least suit a rear fitment and rolling diameter must be equal. That is easy enough to work out with all the calculators etc available on the net nowadays.

Goes without saying that an OEM 17" spare now goes on every trip with us although it does get removed to the shed for closer to home running around.

Just get a spare full size wheel with tire and then job is a good one and if you are worried about space invest in a roof box and bars ..........solves all problems and gives the ultimate in stealth mode :assflash: :assflash: I mean who on earth would think this car leave most things standing :bigblink:

Amanda - not all of us have enough torque to stop time. You could put the entire third world in that car and still pull a respectable 0-100.

Hehehehehehe thats why I am suggesting full size spare as I have and roof box and bars :assflash: Cheapest option rather than trying to relocate the battery :bigwave: Ohhh the bars are from a c5 a6 and fit ;)

You can use any size rim that you want(so long as it clears the brakes) you just have to increase the tyre profile size to compensate, as long as the rolling diameter difference is no larger than 5% & you don't drive for extended periods over 40mph it should be fine.
I've had first hand experience of a B5 S4 that was run with a stock wheel that was 12% smaller than the rest for 150km(90Miles) @ 120kph(75Mph) and it damaged the centre diff pretty badly.

In the USA all cars have to have a spare wheel by law(most states), so the RS6's over there have a battery box that mounts to one of the side panels in the boot/cargo bay which houses the battery so they can fit a spare in.
Maybe see if you can find one of those battery boxes on ebay or through a specialist Audi wrecked over there?
Or you may be able to order one directly from Audi here as it's a stock part?
