Ok now, the rs6 is beginning to take the piss literally...
Had the coilovers fitted last week; and dont really drive the rs6 everday as its a second car! Came home from work today and was planning on going out; i started the car on the drive it warmed up and i headed to see a friend!

Now when i was slowing down at some lights and the car dropped into first gear like normal but with a huge thud, no noise just weird! I carried on driving thinking the box was warming up abd then it did it again...

I drove in manual mode and when driving and going from 1st into 2nd and 2nd into first its revving up but going into gear with a thud later...

What can this be, the cars had a new box in 2008 from audi, what now? What could this be... Help please...

Can the torque converter be replaced alone? Or does the whole box need to be changed? What does the torque converter do?

Box has to come out to change the converter, normally if the converter has gone the box will go soon after to. Before you panic too much get it checked with VCDS or similar you might be lucky and have a simple fault like low oil or dodgy solenoid.

Converts torque.

You can have the 'box refurbished (including the TC) but could be hit and miss. It's best to just have it replaced.
Get your car to MRC, Unit20 or Camberley Audi if you're a stickler for Audi service centers.
You are panicking, it could be something simple like low ATF. Get the car looked at properly and make an informed decision then.

EDIT: Bilko1 said it all first.

Did you buy it cheap? have you got a warranty? They are not <beep> they need looking after properly. Because it had a new box fitted by Audi it should of had a 2 year warranty unless it was a recon unit. I would phone the Audi garage that did it and get them to sort it asking for a good will gesture.

They will take you to hell and back mate, they are not for the faint hearted in all respects and deep pockets and big nuts are a must, (apologies Amanda).

If the box was replaced then it would have 2 Years warranty, it may be older then 2 years but it could be worth talking to Audi and asking for some goodwill towards sorting it out.

Pray that its just low ATF levels, or something other then converter or box.

A fluid change is always a good first move when the box plays up though.

(Vagcom gave me a fault, torque converter and I hate faults ) I get a slippage(not always and is intermittant) and then more often a huge thump when the box changes gear. I have had a gearbox service fluids etc and check of all sensors normal....that confirms the torque converter is on the way out  Thankfully I have a warranty
