I have high pitched whining noise.............no not my girlfriend, the car

It started the other morning when it was really cold. It's a high pitched whining noise which gets louder as I accelerate and louder if I turn the wheel. Sounds as if it's coming from just ahead of the driver footwell. Has happened every day this week in the mornings on way in to work but not always there on my way home.

Any advice greatly appreciated

Louder if you turn the wheel? Strange!

Something to do with the power steering system? Low fluid level? Pump starting to give up?

Somebody who knows what they are talking about will be along soon!!!

Could be the steering...

Are you sure it's not you Secondary Air Pump giving up the ghost? The make one hell of a noise when they start to go!

Just make sure it's not low ATF in the box. If the pump is struggling because the level is low it will cavitate and whine. No sign of leaks?

thanks for the replies. No can't see any leaks. Odd because the car has been sitting in the sun all day and it's not there now. Seems to be mainly in the mornings when it's cold.

Maybe a trip to MRC is due

So it whines on the way to work, and not on the way back? Sounds normal to me.

ive not had my c5 long but surely low PAS would throw a light up on the dash? Only when cold suggests belt to me

There is no low level light for the pas , if it gets low it'll make a loud whining .

thanks very much for the help everyone, especially drybeer and Grizz. Exactly as you said the pas fluid was low, not even reaching the dip stick.

Filled it up last night and noise has completely gone.

If I give to some to my girlfriend will it stop her high pitched whining in the mornings too?
